Unless you live alone or all your housemates are smarter than average, sometime down the line some *!%@ will overload any lower capacity extension cord and you'll be lucky if all it does is melt the socket and not burn your house down. That's why you need 12 gauge or better like this, even if you immediate projected use doesn't require it. Consider it idiot-insurance. I have several like this. They're pretty near perfect.
