I've been rockhounding for a couple of years and grabbed this to review as I have a similar set to compare to from when I first started out. This set comes with the basics of what you will need to go out and explore, with the most important items being a rock hammer/geo pick and chisel with hand protection. The goggles, gloves, loupe, and paracord wristband are nice, but not really essential. Overall, the items are of decent quality with the hammer forged as a single piece of carbon steel. One piece being key as picks constructed of 2 pieces need always be inspected for integrity of the connection. The gold standard for geo picks is a 22 oz. Estwing hammer, which costs double the price of this kit just for the hammer. So the hammer provided in this kit is 50% heavier than the Estwing, but it's still a good hammer. The chisel seems like solid construction with a nice 1" wide tip that is perfect for hammering into cracks of rock for separation. It's the same forged steel construction with molded plastic hand guard - and trust me, the hand guard is nice after having come home with bruised hands using chisels without hand guards! The gloves are just 'meh' as they look more like garden gloves. The goggles are grade school goggles. The paracord wristband with whistle, compass, and saw is nice for "what if" scenarios. The loupe is okay as well.Overall, this is perfect for the beginning rock hounder and makes a great gift as well. You really can't beat the price for all the items that you receive in the kit. The rock hammer and chisel are solid tools and well worth the $23 price tag alone. Go for it!

The pick is great, the shovel is made out of tin. It lasted one time out and the hand bent.

My son likes to break open rocks to see if there is anything interesting inside or occasionally will get those fake toy ones that they have cast around different things and you have to break them open. This set is great for this and he has had so much fun with it.

My wife and I have really gotten into rockhounding the past couple of years - it's a great way to enjoy and explore the outdoors, get some exercise, and enjoy hiking and camping as well. An additional bonus is the equipment required is pretty minimal and inexpensive - and this is a great example! The hammer is pretty good quality - the tip and chisel end will lose their edge (and effectiveness) over time, but with such a nominal investment you won't be overly concerned. If you want to invest in more expensive gear in the future, at least this equipment lets you see if it's an activity you enjoy without big upfront costs. I was surprised by the quality of the folding pick/shovel. It's still bargain-class gear, but it's still above average with less flex in the blade compared to other tools I've seen. You might consider keeping the shovel in the trunk or with your emergency gear. The rest of the equipment is very cheap - the goggles and jewelers loupe are more for show than anything else. The gloves were interesting in that each finger had a rubber 'thimble'-type protective sleeve - nonetheless they're so cheap they really aren't worth keeping. You'll definitely want to make sure you get a decent pair of rugged gloves and safety glasses (for glasses, consider investing in Z87.1+ ANSI rated - there're more expensive, but the '+' is for impact resistance - you'll want that when swinging the hammer). All in all this is a pretty good beginner set. It would also make a nice gift for someone just getting into the rockhounding hobby.

I've had a number of pick axes over my life time, so I when I saw this one I was not quite sure if it was going to measure up to standards. It didn't take long to see this pick was going to hold up just find to my needs and rock hounding trips. The other little items like the jewelers loupe are an added bonus, the safety glasses and gloves are a good addition to have and I recommend you use them. Take this from someone who has had a lot of rock chips in the eyes because of my foolishness by not wearing them. The shovel in my opinion is a throw away, it's very cheep and light weight and not of much use. The survival bracelet is ok if you think you might need a compass on your wrist., but the real selling point at least for me is the pick, and the jewelers loupe, and that alone makes this package worth the money.â›ï¸ðŸ’¯ðŸ’¯ðŸ’¯

The hammer is made in the style of a Estwing hammer, being made of one solid piece of metal. This is a very strong and durable design for a hammer since there is no connection that can be a potential point of failure. The chisel is a safety design, and while its big and bulky, it is much safer than a traditional chisel and well worth the hassle of carrying such a bulky chisel.Just the price of a Estwing hammer alone is more than this whole kit, so this is a great bargain for someone just starting out rock-hounding.

We have recently gotten into rock polishing, and plan to also do some rock hounding, so I decided to order this starter kit.The main interest was the hammer and chisel, but it also came with some extra accessories. The hammer and chisel are good quality and I have confidence they will work well. The goggles are standard as are the gloves. Nothing fancy. The loupe is lower end. I tried looking at the diamond in my ring with it and it wasn't the clearest view. The bracelet is an interesting addition but I guess if you are far enough out looking for rocks, you could get lost and it could come in handy. We're looking forward to getting out to explore some rocky areas nearby.
