I had never used one of these before but we have been eating a lot of TJ’s frozen gyoza lately and our vegetable steamer just broke, so I thought I’d give this a try. Well it cools the frozen gyoza perfectly, and in the same amount of time as with the metal vegetable steamer. I love that it fits in our smaller pot and that it doesn’t require a separate lid (= less dishes), and I appreciate that it came with little paper liners to make cleanup a breeze. To be honest, I’ve used it 3 times so far and because of the paper liners I haven’t even needed to clean it at all (but I make sure to position the gyoza so that they’re not touching the sidewalls, so that helps.) I’m not sure what the liners are made of but they feel like parchment paper so I’m sure I could diy some once they run out. You can only fit 4 gyoza in each tray (so 8 total) and that works for us, but it could be on the small side for some. (You could probably fit 5 if you squeezed them in, but if you’re steaming something like gyoza that stick together obviously that’s not ideal.) At first I was rotating the trays halfway through cooking because I was a little worried they wouldn’t cook evenly but both times they looked exactly the same halfway through, and so the third time I just let them be and they were all perfectly cooked. There is a slight neutral-smell when the bamboo gets wet and warm, but it’s not bad by any means and it doesn’t affect the flavor of the food at all. All in all I really love this little thing! I would definitely repurchase and would absolutely recommend it to anyone who cooks gyoza or dumplings at home.

It certainly works well. It’s small, it’s cute, but is it practical? That depends on you, I suppose. If you like Dim Sum portions or you want a light meal for one, this is a great size! You can see from the pictures that you can steam enough to fill you up, but I think they’d be better used as presentation “bowlsâ€. You can steam 4 soup dumplings, but can serve 5-8 dumplings in it for a really nice presentation on the table. The same for little Bao (pork/beef/chicken/veggie buns). You can steam two at a time in a single layer, but can serve 3-5 without the lid in place. If you are part of a couple, a larger size would be advisable. You can steam larger items or simply more items at once for a shared meal. If you happen to be eating solo sometime, you can just use a single steamer basket to cook for one.One big plus is that this steamer comes with precut parchment liners that keep food from sticking to the bamboo “rack†inside the basket. A disadvantage is its small size makes it difficult to find a pan that it fits onto if you don’t have a wok to use for steaming. For my larger steamer, I use an aluminum adapter ring I got on Amazon. I wasn’t able to find one for a 6†bamboo steamer, so I made one by cutting down a large, disposable foil pizza pan. The center hole is large enough to let a lot of steam through but small enough that the basket won’t fall through into the water. I also made it wide enough to accommodate a variety of water pan sizes. Just be sure to fold the edges over and flatten them as best as you can.As far as use and care instructions, the ones included are sufficient, but I’d suggest you check out the bamboo steamer guide on the Woks of Life website for a really comprehensive overview for getting the most out of your bamboo steamer.https://thewoksoflife.com/how-to-use-bamboo-steamer/

The appearance is that of a pretty standard bamboo steamer, but on closer inspection, you'll notice that the two levels are deeper, and therefore higher capacity than most - particularly the smaller scale steamers. You could easily put a large bao or bigger vegetable pieces in there to steam. Included in the purchase are handy steamer liners that are a perfect fit. The bamboo itself is quite smooth and the build quality seems high - everything is well aligned on the item I received. I enjoy steamed foods frequently and it's nice to have an individual size steamer that is truly functional and isn't just novelty quality.

This steamer is a handy option if you’re in need of a compact tool for cooking dim sum or bao buns. However, it’s pretty small, which might limit its usefulness for larger servings. Additionally, the quality of the wood didn’t quite meet my expectations—it felt a bit off compared to other bamboo steamers I’ve used. Not bad, but there’s room for improvement.
