It is round with a hole in the center and can be used where loosening from corrosion or vibration is a concern. Lock washers are commonly used in any application using a bolt where two pieces are being drawn together.

My new drill press utilizes a bolt-on vice, BUT I grew very tired of constantly needing two wrenches to loosen and re-tighten the bolts and nuts every time I needed to shift the vice’s position. SO, I decided to order some new bolts, flat washers, lock washers (these “split washersâ€), and WING NUTS, so that I could just use my fingers to accomplish the task. LOVE them!

My wife's yoga ball seat decided to fall apart after the bolts backed out. I placed these in between the bolts and seat frame. No loose bolt anymore.

These are the thickist washers that I have ever encountered in my whole life. They are twice as thick as the thickist washers that I have encountered before.
