Could work as a beginner set, maybe...Disclaimer: I've only played croquet a few times in my life. It's easy to setup and a fun game to play with your friends and kids. This is where this set comes in. I have very mixed feelings about it. Here's the breakdown:Pros:1. Includes everything* (see in cons) you need to play it2. The holding caddy is pretty cool and very nice addition3. All wood has a nice lacquered finish to it. There are absolutely not splinters or any rough edges at all, including on the caddy4. It's a full size set. Kids can play it too, of course, by holding the mallets half-way. That said, this set is not for smaller kids. They'll need to be at least 5 or 6 years old to play.Cons:1. There are no game instructions whatsoever. This is the main reason that stops me from recommending it as a beginner set. Not a huge deal as you can always look up the instructions online, but still. Still, I don't see why they couldn't have spent 20c on a brochure.2. Not a pro set by any means. The machining of the wood is not uniform. For example: the balls are of slightly different sizes. Some sticks on the mallets have places where the wood has been clearly chipped off or cut off before it's been lacquered. The mallet sticks don't all screw into the mallet heads the same distance, which results in slightly different heights for the mallets. None of this matters for beginners, but I'd expect better for a $100 dollar set.3. No assembly instructions for the caddy. It's not hard to deduce looking at the pictures on the product listing, but you still have to figure it out on your own.4. No pre-drilled holes in the caddy handle. I was afraid of screws cracking the wood since you're driving them into the grain, so I drilled in the holes myself, just in case. I recommend you do that too.5. The box it comes in is an ordinary cardboard box. For this reason, it's not a great gift set either.

This is a nice little set, with everything you need to get started. The rack is alright, at least holding everything in place for the occasional popup game. All components are milled alright, with some malformations here and there, but it is wood and not expected to be perfect...or is it. Here is where the star deduction comes in, at ~$100, I would expect it to be a little more refined, reducing the obviousness of malformations, but the wood has decent weight, so it should hold up against regular use. That said, it is a complete set that will get you going, occasional fun for the family and friends.
