this item would not turn on when I received it. I replaced the battery, and it seems to wok great and will make an excellent gift for my dad who is having a harder time seeing the mechanical gauges as he gets older.

You need a considerable amount of force to hold the base down, while turning the thimble with the ratchet/clutch/break in use. If you spin the thimble until the ratchet starts to click, the base lifts from the part.
