Without proper maintenance grease will build up internally within your microwave/range hood. Causing unwanted smells as well as damage to your motor, fan, and exhaust system. The grease build up is also hazardous due to the high possibility of a grease fire.
FILTER CAPTURES GREASE
Grease filters are designed to capture grease prior to entering the microwave/range hood protecting your system with the multilayers of aluminum mesh.
WASH & REUSE
To maintain your filter soak the filter in warm water utilizing a degreasing dish washing soap, a light bristle brush followed by rinsing thoroughly.

Went to install and the tab broke off and left a hole in the filter. Completely useless. Tabs are plastic. Filter fit is not great. I'd give 0 stars if I could.
