Pieranunzi is recognized as one of Italy's finest jazz musicians and I have to tell you after hearing this wonderful record, what a great standards JAZZ record, absolutely sensational with an extraordinary mellow sound of ERIC VLOEIMANS a young Holland trumpeter in three songs. In addition to Vloeimans for his effort, Pieranunci is joined by three very talented sidemen, each of whom are quite capable of being leaders. Listen, the very great guitarist PHILIP CATHERINE influenced by the only Django Reinhardt, the bassist HEIN VAN DE GEYN who has worked on and off with Pieranunzi for several years also worked among others with Chet Baker, Lee Konitz and the harmonica wizard Toots Thielemans, the drummer JOE LABARBERA that for the present is most famous for being a member of pianist Bill Evan's final trio but naturally is a very great drummer.Talking about songs all of these are well-known jazz standards although he is a talented composer, being his renditions of these familiar tunes quite fresh and inventive. The opening track "Speak Low" with a Catherine guitar demonstration and inspiring piano accompaniment, an usually slow ballad like "My Foolish Heart" taken at a likable medium-tempo pace, "What Is This Thing Called Love" with a magnificient Eric Vloeiman's trumpet (hinting at Miles Davis), a jazz waltz version of "Sweet and Lovely" where Catherine is quite prominent (a la Wes Montgomery), a beauty vintage melody "You've Changed", a cooking version of "Just One Of These Things" where Catherine shows his roots in Django Reinhardt, "Alone Together" with a full quintet and a fine feature for Vloeimans, an exquisite "Tenderly" with a considered piano-guitar duet, "How Deep Is The Ocean" with strong solos by Pieranunzi and Catherine, another time with Vloeimans lyrical demonstration in "You Don't Know What Love Is", the trumpet-less quartet romps through "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" and a mellow closer "Monglow". In a short words very outstanding record I give it 6 stars.
