About this item

  • The Galileo thermometer consists of a sealed glass tube that is filled with liquid (paraffin oil) and several floating bubbles. The bubbles are glass spheres filled with a colored liquid mixture.
  • Attached to each bubble is a little metal tag that indicates a temperature. These metal tags are calibrated counterweights. The weight of each tag is slightly different from the others. Since the bubbles are all hand-blown glass, they aren't exactly the same size and shape.
  • The bubbles are calibrated by adding a certain amount of fluid to them so that they have the exact same density. So, after the weighted tags are attached to the bubbles, each differs very slightly in density (the ratio of mass to volume) from the other bubbles, and the density of all of them is very close to the density of the surrounding liquid.
  • As the temperature of the air outside the thermometer changes, so does the temperature of the liquid surrounding the bubbles. As the temperature of the liquid changes, it either expands or contracts, thereby changing its density. So, at any given density, some of the bubbles will float and others will sink. The bubble that sinks the most indicates the approximate current temperature.
  • A narrow spout connects to the body below the liquid level and rises above the water level, where it is open to the atmosphere. When the air pressure is lower than it was at the time the body was sealed, the water level in the spout will rise above the water level in the body and when the air pressure is higher, the water level in the spout will drop below the water level in the body.

Got this for my husband for Christmas. He is always checking the temperature, humidity and barometric pressure. This is visually very nice and fun to look at especially when the blue water starts to rise! I love that his fits perfectly on our TV Cabinet. Fun and attractive gift for the weather fanatic.

Set up was moderately easy. All that is needed is a phillips head screwdriver and some patience. The hardest part is getting the tube into the globe. Someone recommended wetting the tube...I didn't. Maybe probably should have! I used reverse osmosis water & blue food coloring. Putting the tube into the globe took about 10 minutes. I had the styrofoam the globe came in underneath it as it is fragile. I just kept turning & gently pushing & pulling the tubing until it went through.It looks nice, we will see how accurate it is!

I consider this instruments as an ornament mostly and they look really nice for me. Considering other reviews, assembly might be a little tricky but not much. It would be advisable to start checking how the thermometer and barometer fit into the recessed areas of the wooden base, in my case they fitted just fine. Filling the barometer should be done according with the booklet instructions, the only thing it doesn't say is how much water to put in, I would advice to avoid spills, to put it short and then considering how water level evolves add some more.All in all this is not for accurate measurements but works very fine and I like it very much.

I have one of these myself and purchased another for a friend. They are beautiful to look at, but also provide me with great weather information. I was actually looking for a water barometer and this is perfect. It doesn't matter to me what the pressure, I only want to know if it is high, low, rising or falling. I have found that it is a very accurate predictor of my arthritis pain. Now that I have it, if I am experiencing exceptionally bad pain and the pressure is low, I can dismiss it as being pressure-related.

Lovely item, I wish the globe barometer was more securely held in stand. I accidentally broke mine this AM and I'm not sure if it could be replaced.

It's beautiful, worth the money!! Arrived in a well packaged box! Didn't realize it used distilled water, so I had to buy before I could use the storm glass barometer, but looking forward to that! Didn't hit submit, so I will this time. Little frustrating filling the glass storm barometer with colored water,but patience & persistence paid off, love it!!!!!I loved the one I got so much I bought one for my twin sister recently!!!!!!

I received the product in a timely manner I had a broken storm globe the company quickly warranted it and replaced it. I am happy with the product and the company. Good people to work with!

I got this weather station for my mom, and it's a very attractive desk ornament. However, the cutout spot for the globe barometer in the wooden base was too small. We followed another reviewer's advice and sanded it a little larger, but we still cracked the globe trying to fit it in the base.She liked the look of it so much we ordered another one, this time everything fit. Now we have two, one sans barometer, but still very nice looking. I'd advise being very careful with the glassware of this product.
