Museum Series Claybord is made from premium warp-resistant 1/8" profile FSC-certified Hardboard that is sealed and protected with Ampersands proprietary Archiva-Seal™ and coated with an acid-free kaolin clay ground that is perfect for mixed media. The ultra-smooth, absorbent clay surface allows for unlimited techniques: etching, erasing, reworking, adding color, and scratching it away to add contrast, texture, and fine detail. It is highly absorbent and accepts more mediums than any other surface. Excellent for India, pigmented, and alcohol inks. It is also great for acrylics, collage, pencil, pen, airbrush, watercolor, gouache, mixed media, and image transfers. One can achieve half tones with this, not just hatch and cross hatch. Either by sanding the ink when dry with a 6 or 800 wet or with damp Q-tips with soda. This can produce images that volunteer right out of the fog. Too cool. Since the clay remains unscratched, you can re-ink with brush or pen. I like certain types of ink. If they don't say permanent, the pen is likely water based ink and smears for effects but is not going to dry or be water resistant.

I love these boards for multi media or my encaustic work. You can create texture into the board before putting the gesso on, just keep it a light layer so you don't fill the scratches you made. I use these in different sizes even mounting smaller into larger. Very versatile!
