Usually off by a degree. Add a degree to the reading and you'll get your actual temperature.

This was the second thermametor I ordered. I sending the first brand back because it wasn't accurate. It said my granddaughters temp was 97.4 and I knew that wasn't right because she was very warm. When I took her temp with this one it said 100.4. This one works great.
