My 2015 WRX trunk released stopped working and the only way to open it was to fold down the seats, crawl inside the truck, and use the emergency mechanical pull. I tried to take the latch apart and regrease it but no luck. I'd recommend not doing this and just buy a new latch as it appears the electric mechanism was at fault. The same part was $112 on the Subaru parts website without shipping cost. It took 5 minutes to swap the latch. To remove the original latch, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the two bolts with a 10mm socket wrench. Installing the new latch is the same process in reverse. Works like a dream (if you dream of opening your trunk when you want to). Also note the new part is a new style but a direct swap for the older latch assembly.

Online it looked sketchy and had doubts on it. Dealership tried charging me $500 for the part and labor. Gave it a try and man it saved me time and money ! (2015 Subaru wrx sti limited)
