This book has some terrific designs for bargello in classical patterns for the needleworker. It has some interesting color combinations and great pictures. There is a pattern laid out for each design. It assumes that you know how to begin a piece of canvaswork on your own and can choose your own canvas and the fibers to cover it. Not a how-to book, but a great source of patterns.

This Bargello book is hands down the most visually appealing of my dozen plus books on the topic-I call it embroidery porn, but its charts can be hard for my old eyes to read. The book is inspirational, especially for those looking for examples of how to finish their embroidery into fine decorative objects, but would be more useful if the publisher had focused less on giving us eye candy and more on printing readable charts. Publishers: Please, pretty please, give them each a full page opposite a close-up full color photo of the pattern! My copy is a hardback with full color photo covers which match the dust jacket-very high quality publication worth the price!

I did bargello in the 70s, and as I approach retirement, I thought it was something I'd like to do again. I waited for this book to become available, and I'm so glad I did! The patterns are classic, and the book was like brand new. If you are serious about bargello, get this book - you won't be disappointed!

Although it's some of the most beautiful bargello work I've ever seen (and I've been doing fiber art for many years), I'm not giving it more stars because it's almost impossible with materials available today to duplicate the designs. Joyce Petschek is really an artist. But, her designs are based on the kits she put together years ago for high-end stores. The copyright is 1997, almost ten years ago. She works primarily in Madeira silk, which, as far as I can tell is no longer available (I Googled it). Madeira makes fine cotton embroidery and sewing threads, but I haven't been able to find its silk. So it's difficult to figure out what is needed in other needlepoint fibers. Sometimes her instructions are to work with threads provided. Presumably, she means the threads that are provided in kits that are no longer available. The charts are complicated but that may be because the designs are complicated. The work is beautiful, but this book is not for beginners.

This is a beautiful book with superb colour ideas. The book is great for all skill levels with clear instructions.If you are drawn to this beautiful craft you will not be disappointed with this book.Very inspiring !

Yes, it is beautiful Bargello. Yes the pictures are lovely and her color use is (mostly) very fine but (here it comes) her tone is condescending and the whole book feels like a sales pitch for her Bargello workshops in *her lovely Tuscan Villa* ( have I got that right?).Her charts are impossible to follow and her directions are unclear. If you are just looking for a book of absolutely lovely pictures of Bargello work, this book is for you. If you want to go on one of her workshops or tours, again, a great book. If you are a needlepointer, this is an big waste of money (again, unless you want to see really pretty pictures).I wish someone had written this review before I bought this book. I really do.

I love needle pointing but hate the "new" patterns they sell in the stores. I would prefer to make something that will last for generations. This book is just that. Great patterns.

Though the designs are lovely, if you like traditional patterns and colours which I do, I do wish we were given information, before purchase, as to which country the book was published in because this will affect whether you can buy the embroidery wools/silks in the UK easily or not. Customers who have bought similar books will know that the patterns are brand wool/silk specific. It's a right pain finding a pattern you like then realising you will not be able to buy the yarn because it's not DMC or Anchor. Thank heavens for the internet for purchasing American yarns.
