At this price, I'd expect product would come painted/powder coated. It is just 2 splined collars with u-joints and collapsing D shaft. It is solidly made. My 1985 CJ7 steering shaft was sticking slightly on turns under slight throttle. Oiling it's upper joint helped, but showed there was wear. New part eliminated this sticking and tightened up slop I was used to in the lower joint. It made the Jeep steering very responsive and no longer needed regular steering wheel adjustments to stay straight in lane.

I put this shaft on a 77 CJ5 and it fit perfectly with the quick set screw adjustable shaft. As many have noted the shaft needs to be primed and painted. I had a hard time getting the steering knuckle on the spline at the steering column end. Knuckle at the steering box slides on and tightened up super easy. Suggestion: take the 8-10 bolts and disconnect turn signal wiring harness under the dash and remove the steering column (prime and paint while you have it out) and give the steering column spline a good cleaning. I then tapped on the steering knuckle to the steering column spline and added the shaft and power steering knuckle. I left the shaft set screw loose and slide the entire steering column back thru the dash down to the power steering spline. I connected the steering column bracket under the dash that control the depth of the column inside the jeep. I used a soft mallet and tapped on the steering wheel to tap the adjustable shaft to length and tightened the steering column bracket bolts in place once I got steering column where I wanted it in the bracket. Blue Locktite the set screws on the steering shaft under the hood and finish steering column assembly under dash. I prefit and taped off shaft before prime and paint. The steering knuckles and shaft adjustments will be a PITA to slide on if you paint that surface area. This was a huge upgrade and the steering is tight and responsive.

1977 cj5 with power steering: This is a super tight fit onto my tilt steering column. Had to clean up the splines on the steering column to even get it to budge. And the column splines looked great. Fyi I used a wolf engineering billit bearing on the column. Really tightens up the end of it. I have yet to install it onto the cj5 power steering box. I will update this later. The only bad part about this is the shaft is its raw metal. I purchased some "fluid film" to spray on it from amazon. Ill give it a try and see how it holds up. Overall well built thick shaft. Cheapest I found was here on amazon. Again I will update this later

Honestly bought this product because a friend recommended it. Holy Smokes !!! It is a night into DAY improvement over the OEM steering shaft. My CJ now has extremely responsive steering and its no longer guess work to keep it straight on the roadways. Used to steer while constantly going back and forth between 10 and 2 just to keep it in a straight line and now it almost hands free. Easy to install, i would recommend taking the new part and cleaning it very well, applying primer and paint to prevent rust and keep the part looking new. clean all mounting surfaces very well on the steering box and fire wall and use a good grease while installing. Very happy with the product!

High quality part, little pricey but buy once, cry once, my Jeep handles better than I could have hoped for. Change the lower bearing on steering column shaft while you are in there.
