What does a ground strap do?
The ground strap is the component that connects the engine block to the chassis or negative battery terminal, allowing for the completion of the electrical circuit and, consequently, the operation of different vehicle systems.
Why do you need a ground wire?
The ground wire is designed to provide a path for electrical current to travel if the normal paths aren't available.This could be because the other paths are damaged,or there is too much electricity for them.A properly grounded electrical system is vital to vehicle.Without a good ground,ignition system will underperform,you'll experience random issues with charging,you can easily end up stranded.
Where do you connect ground straps?
Always use a heavy ground cable and connect one end to the negative battery terminal, and the other end to the starter motor or engine block as close to the starter as possible. This will insure the correct ground path to the starter motor.
Bare Copper Braided Ground Strap
This is the most common way folks connect the main ground strap at the engine and essentially,the way the factory did it.It is not a bad idea to loosen,clean,and reattach the ground cable every couple of years,just to maintain good electrical connection between all the mounting points.
