  • Black hair is stronger and more durable than white, but the first wipe of rosin takes more time than white bow hair, need to wipe the rosin hard,The first time to wipe rosin bow hair broken a few is a normal phenomenon, do not worry
  • Bow hair is pure natural bow hair, not rinsed, there may be some grease, if you can not wipe the rosin, you can use a wet wipe
  • The bow itself is well-made, nice and straight. It's smooth, comfortable, lightweight and beautiful. No bend at all. Natural horsetail
  • This bow is a very reasonable selection for a beginner such. It is priced and manufactured appropriately for beginners to players. I would recommend this bow,Beginner level appropriate.
  • This bow is of great quality and very much worth the price. Under fine craftsmanship, the sound quality has been improved to a great extent.

So, it's my understanding that black horse hair is supposed to last longer than white horse hair. I can't report on that for some time now.And there's no way to rate a bow on sound quality. Getting a bow is like getting a wand in Harry Potter world--the sound isn't just about the bow itself, but also about the player, how it's used, what kind of music it will be used to play, and the instrument it will play on.Now, I'm not saying there isn't a difference between $50 student bows and $800 bows ore $10,000 bows. But if you go into a shop with your violin and try out the $50 ones, chances are, you'll find one you like as well as some of the $300 bows in the show, and if you play well enough to appreciate the $800 bows, chances are you'll find some you like better than bows 3 or 4 times the price. And if you have multiple violins, that bow probably won't be the right bow for the other ones. This bow looks better-made than I could ever have expected for such a cheap price. It is heavier than the student bows I own but not horribly heavy. The hope is that for a more advanced player, it might be useful for making a grittier, louder sound in some circumstances--such as blues and bluegrass fiddling--which I've read is and advantage of black Mongolian horsehair (though opinions about stringed instruments should always be taken with large grains of salt). It might also help a young player play more assertively, if the things people say about durability and loudness are true.Regardless, if you're at a point in playing where you can't tell the difference between all the $50 bows at the shop because you're instrument isn't good enough, this bow will save money. It's well made and a great option for beginners.

I have a very old violin and bow that are higher value and then I have a violin and bow that was very inexpensive. There’s a time and place for both. This bow, like many other reviewers mention, takes more time and effort to rosin for the first time compared to traditional light colored hair bows. But it is worth it. The sound produced is very nice, especially for “slow and low” songs (slow tempo, pianissimo).

To my own astonishment, I am updating my review, changing this from 1 to 4 stars.I've never owned a black hair bow before, maybe it's that different. I'm leaving my previous reviews up to document my journey with this bow. Go the the end for my current thoughts.ORIGINAL REVIEWI am a professional violinist and violin teacher of over 30 years. I was excited to find this brazilwood bow at a reasonable price point. Never tried black hair; there's always a first time.Unfortunately I haven't yet been able to test out the quality of the bow because I can't get it fully rosined. I've been trying for days but I keep getting bored. I've tried three different rosins, scratched them multiple times with a key (even though the were already worked in) and I still can't get the rosin to stick to the hair. So far I've broken 5 hairs while trying to rosin it.The reviewers who said it takes 10-15 minutes "like any bow" were wrong on two counts: It takes more than 10-15 minutes and most bows can be fully rosined in far less than 15 minutes.I'll update if I ever have the patience to finish it. Maybe I'll put on BBC's "Pride and Prejudice."UPDATE#1: We (yes it took two us) finally got it rosined and I can safely say it is not a great bow even for the price. It has a lot of white noise on the bow changes and requires too much pressure to play. Won't even produce a clear tone if I try to play softly. I have an old fiberglass bow that plays better. (Similar price point)UPDATE #2: I left this bow sitting out for a couple of weeks and just today took it up again to give it another shot. Suddenly it plays very nicely. White noise nearly gone. No idea why that is--maybe the rosin had to cure or something. At any rate, with it playing well I'll give you the rest of the important info:GOOD:1) Balance is nice, balance point slightly closer to the frog than I like but not bad2) Performs sautille bowing with ease (!)3) Stick is straight4) A little heavier than I like but not too badBAD:1) The hairs are pretty fragile. They are still breaking off when I rosin.2) Not as flexible as I like.

Review for “Brazilwood Ebony Violin Bow 4/4 with Natural Horsehair (Black Horse Hair Violin Bow 4/4”Color: Black Horse Hair Violin Bow 4/4This black horse hair violin bow works well, and the darkness of the hairs has the unexpected effect of making the player stand out a bit more in the orchestra. It’s a subtle difference, but I imagine it could help you find your student among the others more easily. We had several violinists of multiple levels try this bow, and everyone was happy with the look and the performance. Glad to have such a great option for a second bow. Happy bowing!

Tried two different types of rosin and could not get to play. Super dissapointing. There is not enough rosin in the world to get this to play. So much for dark hair being the best?

For literally the same price as a cheap one I got this one is so much nicer. It sounds so much more clear and brighter than my other one. Works really good, and I do like the design, and the black hair seems to be the main difference. I've never really thought about it, but I might want to get some for a tone test.

I am a total beginner at violin, so take this with a grain of salt. I have a beginner violin. Due to some carelessness, I broke the tensioner on the bow that came with my violin. This bow was an excellent choice for a beginner replacement. I would say it's better quality than my original bow. It took a bit to get the rosin properly applied (I had to watch some videos for help). Once applied, the bow sounded great and felt great on the strings.
