This Brother SD150HDH ($300) easily stitched two Sallie Tomato Tripper backpacks in 600D Cordura nylon and in heavy upholstery cloth. Having previously used a Kenmore mechanical for 30 years, and then pricey machines touted as heavy duty, this is my best machine ever for both bag making and general sewing. The longer feed dogs pull thick and thin fabrics equally well without using the included walking foot. It sews through 8 layers of unwaxed canvas with a size 14 universal or denim needle without lugging. It balks at more layers, but, conveniently, raising and lowering the presser foot erases the "too thick" error code, so there is no need to restart the machine. The needle up/down position is a must for me. It is heavy, solidly built, powerful, and after 6 months continues to sew perfect stitches. The optional extension table is nice to have. Needle threading and bobbin winding are better than other machines I have tried. For my machine, pliers are needed to twist the needle out of the needle bar after sewing very heavy fabrics; otherwise this is the perfect tool for my needs.

I don't know where to begin I love this machine so much. Forgive the tower of Pisa stitch, I was marvelling at it forgetting to look where it was going. This is the third sewing machine I have tried at home to upgrade from my 20 year old Kenmore. I was looking for a mechanical heavy duty (which the Kenmore is not). I had tried a Singer which failed the first day, not inspiring confidence, then a Bernette b05 made in China and honestly looking like it (although I have the Bernette Overlocker which is fantastic) then the Janome HD5000 which was ok but the stitch dial action was just too stiff for my arthritic hands and elbows and the dial is also on a horizontal line, it's not a loop, so you had to go through the ENTIRE row to get back to the beginning, got old real fast. Then came this Brother ST150HDH. Oh WOW!! My engineer husband who unpacks them for me said this one seemed much better quality than the others and I agree, the housing is gorgeous, much prettier than in the picture, like mutton fat. What amazes me is that is it computerized yet costs considerably less than the others PLUS it comes with a walking foot besides the other presser feet. The optional stitch panel is super clear. The computer only shows up as an LCD screen NOT a touch screen (which I dislike on sewing machines as I have brushed them by mistake erasing the whole set-up); the stitches are chosen by a super smooth dial below the screen which then sets the default length and width for that stitch, indicating the presser foot needed (and provided). The Stitch dial is on a circle inside so when you turn the dial to the left of the #1 stitch you get the last or #50 stitch, which makes is super quick and easy to 'navigate' to your desired stitch. You can elongate or widen each stitch using the buttons next to the settings. There is also a button under the twin needle button which activates the automatic reverse/reinforcement stitch and needle up position to end but ...it is simply turned on and off at the touch of that button, no complex dive into the bowels of a computer. Another huge bonus is how quiet this machine is, the quietest of all the machines I have ever used. Neither does the machine shake at all. solid as a rock. It went through 8 layers of (not heavy) canvas with a size 14 needle no problem. I am super impressed and might become a true Brother convert over this. I already have had the Brother1034D Serger for over 7 years now and it continues to be a humble and easy little workhorse. Slight cons: the LED light is fairly dim but I just add another one behind it (pictured) so not a problem. There is not thread cutter but not a big deal since even thread cutters leave a few mm of thread I have to cut manually anyway. I am going to get the optional extension table for it and the side cutter to supplement my serger because the overlock stitch is nice! I better stop now but I would say you've got to give this a try! It's the best of Mechanical and Computerized together leaving out the worst of both.... Update: I got the extension table for it; the Owner's Manual listed it as an accessory only available through a certified dealer, my local dealer had one in stock, the whole thing now measure about 23" long. It's fantastic. A year later: I love it even more, super easy to work with and yes ploughs through layers better than a Bernette38, Sears Kenmore or Singer!!

First, I really appreciate that this machine has a good user's manual. It would be even better with a detailed index, but the quality and information is much greater than in many instruction manuals I have had. Using the excellent instructions, I am able to wind a very even bobbin. My previous machine did not wind an even bobbin and it caused no end of problems. Now I can actually SEW, rather than spend my time untangling bobbin threads. This machine also has a unique way (to me) of guiding the bobbin thread so it picks up automatically and doesn't need to be manually pulled up. This also seems to help in keeping the bobbin thread from tangling. I haven't tried any truly heavy duty material yet, but it sews easily through thick seam or hem points that made my previous machine get stuck. I highly recommend this machine. The only thing I would change is the plastic part of the throat plate. It seems a little flimsy and I live in fear of it breaking. I would have gladly paid $20 more for a metal cover. But overall an excellent machine that will let you enjoy your sewing!

I've owned a Kenmore for 50 years that I bought brand new. I loved that machine! But it needed repaired and there's no one around to do that kind of work anymore and Sears has closed. So, my one daughter that has 3 different Brother sewing machines, (different types) suggested this one. I now have a new love in my life! I love this Brother! WOW! Am I ever impressed with this machine! It does so many things that I use to have to do manually when I sewed and that it threads the needle, helps, now that I don't see as well as I use to. (just remember to gently pull the thread UP after you pass the 1st part and again on 2nd part and it goes right through the eye of the needle) I love being able to see how much thread I have left in my bobbin as I am quilting. And the bonus is all the different stitches and the handy guide you clip onto the handle for easy selection of the stitch you want. The screen shows you the letter of the foot you will need and every foot is marked with the letter so you know which to use. It's just "dial a stitch" AND you can choose the # of stitches you want it to sew, if you want tight or basting sort of stitches. The feet are "snap-on" and it's a quick change. The only thing not mentioned is, the bobbin has a peg that you move the bobbin over against to fill, .. there is a little screw on top of that peg that you can loosen and turn the top to adjust how much thread you want on the bobbin.. just be sure to tighten it back and it has a Phillips screw. There is no screwdriver for that with the kit you get.. but I have lots of tools around that I found one that fit. I LOVE THIS MACHINE!!

I learned (still learning) how to sew on a cheap Kenmore and thought I just a really bad sewer. Turns out, the machine was just really bad. This “upgraded for me†Brother has been great so far!I love the speed control feature as it’s allowed me to have more control over my sewing, letting me really concentrate on accurate stitch alignment. The length of the outlet is also great! I don’t need to use an extension cord anymore. It comes with lots of different feet and tools to actually take care of your machine as well, something my Kenmore didn’t have. The instruction manual is very thorough and explains everything very well.I was very intimidated to use the machine at first, but the learning curve is not too bad once you get over the slight overwhelm, if you’re not used to a good quality machine.I hope to work on many sewing projects with this machine and that it lasts me a lifetime 🩷 Brother products!
