Until now, I've used both cedar balls and blocks. I like this hanging method quite a bit. Of course, you can choose to not screw in the hook and use these as a block when and where it makes sense. These are nicely finished and the hook screws in very cleanly. There's a small piece of sandpaper included, which can be used to "activate" the cedar oil that is in the wood, especially after they've been hanging for a while and the surface becomes dusty. A little disappointed, does not smell like cedar at all. Not sure if these are just that old or what is going on with the lot that I purchased :(
