If you're a new cello player, this mute is going to interfere with your ability to work on your tone. The sound is a very rubbery choking out of the string vibration.

This is an excellent cello mute which is made of a flexible rubber-like substance.It does not mark the bridge, it seems to stay put, and were it to eventually loosen and slip off, it is light enough so that it will do no damage. The spaces between the "fingers" of the mute are wide enough such that you probably will not have trouble with any of them touching the strings.With my (uncalibrated) decibel-measuring application, I found that in general there was approximately a 10-15 db reduction in sound when using the practice mute. To my ears, the difference was significant, and could allow me to practice without disturbing others. Yet the mute did not cause odd wolf tones and distortions in the response of the instrument. A recommended product.

It's not a perfect fit to get onto the strings as it didn't fit the curve of the bridge quite right. Once you get it on the strings, it works as expected, but I feel that I'd be better served with individual string mutes rather than this "all-in-one" mute.
