Your cart is empty. The Chao Gong is a very elegant and distinctive gong that produces a full and sustained wash of musical overtones. Its beauty and its traditional appearance make it a centerpiece in any space, indoors or outdoors. This style of gong dates from the Han Dynasty where it was used for spiritual drumming, large meetings, and to announce the procession of important people. In more modern times, the chao gong has found a place in different genres of music, most notably symphony orchestras.
The Chao Gong, otherwise known as a tam-tam, is one of the most familiar looking Chinese gongs. The chao gong differs in shape from the wind gong in that it has a rim around the outside edge. It also has a very distinctive "target" appearance. It is made of a bronze alloy which is roughly 80% copper and 20% tin, and the crafting process is a mixture of hand hammering and working the bronze on a lathe while carefully heating and cooling the metal. On the chao gong, the center spot and outside rim retain the black copper oxide that forms when the gong is made. On the rest of the gong this coating is removed and the surface is polished. Chao gongs are available in a range of sizes, with each size having its own distinct full sound. Smaller sizes have a rich but higher sound while the larger sizes are deeper and ring with more power and sustain.

I bought this for my wife, who teaches elementary education to use to grab the classes attention when it gets rowdy. It works great. The sound is clear, lingering, and attention-grabbing.

This has a fine sound for the $35 price, however it would have been nice if even a cheap stand had come with it.

This gong is perfect. The sound quality is awesome. It has a long lasting tone. medium type notes. I felt the price is very fair. However, and my mistake, i was expecting a holder for it but realized it does not come with the holder. The beater is pretty nice and not "cheapy" looking. I love it. I will be ordering more from this company.

I got this as a signalling device for a weekly meditation meeting. For a small gong and a small room with 10-15 people meditating, it is just right. There are two main tones: striking the centre or the edge. A light strike in the centre produces a bright, cheery "lets' start the meeting tone". A hard strike in the centre will definitely wake everyone up, if needed, or cut through conversation. The edge produces a lovely mellow and long lasting tone, just right to signal an end without startling people.

I bought this for a piece my handbell choir was doing, which called for a gong. Couldn't find any locally and checked out several on Amazon. I finally chose this one. Although smaller than I would prefer, it was reasonably priced, attractive, and has an authentic "gong" sound. The music director loved it.

Excellent product. Second time I've ordered, and will buy again. The sound is fantastic. Can be played with beater or a bare hand. Twist on string, strike, and let spin while ringing... what a trippy sound! The string requires some installation, but poke it through with a nail, tie off, maybe enlarge the hole in the beater if you have trouble, and your in business. Wonderful display piece and a great musical instrument!

We use the gong to "announce" that a child is graduating from our program. Loud enough for everyone in the office to hear and come out to congratulate the person, but the gong has a very nice tone. Enjoyable. Makes us all smile.
