The material and make is fairly cheap: it's 95% polyester with clunky, fat seams that don't even line up. For 'athletic' fabric, it's quite heavy and the skort lining for the shorts isn't something you would wear to go for a jog or to play tennis, so why put your child in it? The fit is would be a little snug for a taller/larger 9 year old (we ordered the 8/9 size). Our 7 year old is very tall and very thin. The length was perfect for her and the waist band fit, but it would be snug on several of her 2nd grade classmates. Perhaps size up to be safe. My daughter loves the the block color style, and we'll get use out of it on moderately hot Summer days - perhaps a day trip during a vacation? But there's no way she would willing play soccer or go to her Ninja Warrior camp in this; it doesn't offer the same mobility as other athletic skorts.
