The softness of charcoal, with far less of a mess. I like working in colored pencil, but have discovered that the beauty in needing only a few pencils is being given the ability to draw almost anywhere. For those experiencing a lot of breakage with these pencils, it might be your sharpener. I like the Mobius & Ruppert Brass Pencil Sharpeners, and replace the blades whenever pencils start breaking. A sharp blade helps prevent breakage. For blending, I’ve found one of the best tools is a paint or make-up brush, with a stump for finer details. Paper with some tooth (medium texture), will hold more layers and allow greater depth. You can really do a lot with these 3 pencils, and I’ve been enjoying and using them so often, that I’ve already bought a second set.

The Nero pencils are made from oil-based charcoal, which means that they do not smudge and work well with watercolor. They also lack the sheen of graphite pencils and produce much richer, dense blacks. This is a nice set if you want to try out several grades. So far, I love these pencils, which I have been using in combination with my graphite pencils.

Great set, good distinction of light, medium and dark. I use for sketching and designing the value study.Oil base, excellent for roughly laying sketch on watercolor paper before painting. Soft but lays down dark without hurting paper.Am so impressed, ordered the 5.6 mm in medium and soft for my clutch holder.

Very nice charcoal pencils! I plan to reorder. The soft ones feel velvety, oily-like. Doesn’t make you grind your teeth from that “nails on a chalkboard†feeling you get from putting harder charcoal on a surface. A smart buy.

This pencils feel like an oily charcoal that slides on super smoothly and it mixes really well with graphite. Keep in mind it is a little bit shiny, because of the oiliness, you will. be able to sharpen it a lot so you can do really dark details. They are also a good deal because a pencil will last you for a lot of drawings.

These are very soft dark pencils. It is very smooth and consistent while drawing and gives a really dark tone without much effort. I use this as a replacement for Staedtler's 7B and 8B as it is much smoother and easier to handle than them.

I can able to go for very high dark value using this... amazing thing is its reflects less light as compared to graphite pencil with same darkness and also it kind of oil pastel so its can be used over graphite shade. best product.
