Measure Your Head
When it comes to finding the right hat, size matters. Properly measuring your head size will determine your hat size and help you get the perfect fit. The best hat will not only look good, but it will feel good. Before you buy your hat, make sure to measure your head and look at our size chart.
How to Measure Your Head
To measure your head size, all you need is either a measuring tape.
- Wrap the tape measure around the largest part of your head until the two ends meet at the center of your forehead just above your eyebrows. Firmly hold the tape mid-forehead with your finger, not too tightly or too loose.
- The goal is to determine precisely where your hat will sit for the most comfortable fit. Take note of the measurement from your measuring tape and use it to find your corresponding size on our hat sizing chart.
Sizing Tips
- If your measurement is in between sizes on the hat size chart, choose the next larger size.
- Even though our hat sizes are standard across the USA, there are various factors that can affect the fit of the hat, from the hat’s material to how much hair you have. This is all the more reason to go a size up – a slightly roomier hat is much more comfortable and easier to pad than a hat that’s too tight and gives you a headache.
- Don’t worry if you have a big head. We have large hats to help provide the perfect size for you from XXL to XXXL (many of our men’s hats come in XL already).
The Difference Between Men’s and Women’s Hats
- Men’s hats are generally sized numerically or alphabetically, although there are some men’s hats that come in one size fits most. These “one size” hats fit heads with a circumference of 21½” to 23” (medium to large).
- Women’s hat sizing is often one size fits most: the style is made in a standard size with the ability to suit head sizes ranging from 21½” to 22¼” in circumference. While actual hat sizes may vary, many of these “one size” women’s hats come with an inner drawstring or band that can be adjusted to keep the hat in place.
Hat Alteration Options
- Most “one size” hats for men and women come with an inner drawstring that allows you to adjust the fit. These inner drawstrings are usually found stitched into the sweatband itself with an extended piece of string or ribbon that you can tug. Pull gently to adjust the fit, which can tighten the hat up to two sizes.
- Many hats without inner drawstrings feature bands made of leather, elastic, or foam lining. If this is the case, you can still adjust the fit of the hat with sizing tape. This is the preferred method of adjusting hats because it maintains the shape of the sweatband and inner lining without any damage.

I've been wearing this hat for about a week and really like the looks of it and how it allows your head to stay cool due to its ventilated design. The large was a little bit larger than I expected but the medium was too small for my big head so I used the sizing tape that came with it and now it fits perfectly. Like that it provides more shade for my head than a standard baseball cap.

I just ordered my second hat because my dog chewed my first one that I've had for 20 years. There a lots of great things about this hat. 1: the thick brim never flops down in your eyes, no matter how wet or windy it gets. (I wear my hat swimming, so I know). 2 and 3: wind goes right through the mesh, which is great for two reasons, first because it keeps your head cool, and second, because it won't blow the hat off your head. #4: very wide wraparound brim offers terrific sun protection from all directions. #5: Crush it, roll it, stuff it in a corner of your suitcase, no problem. I personally think it looks better after it's been abused for awhile. I soaked my new hat in water and then rolled it and folded it numerous times to give it an aged look. 6. comes with a leather thong to keep it around your neck, or to keep it on your head in extreme winds. 7. It's a good looking hat, whether you like it looking new, or beat up. 8. I know from experience that this hat is very tough and will last for many years (assuming you keep it away from your dog....)

The hat itself is great. Wasn't crushed at all when I got it. Nice air flow to help keep it cool on hot days. Brim is just the right size without being overpowering. The only thing that kept this hat from a 5 star is the tie down. It's uncomfortable and not very functional.

Golf in Tradewinds and hot sun conditions...held up well and provided ample sun protectionNice looking and did not show sweat residue ....with good ventilation. Heavy enough to withstand 15-20 mph wind gusts

We're big fans of Dorfman Pacific hats. They're lightweight. They're comfortable. They last a long time. (We bought this new one because we left one in a hotel room on a previous trip.) The sizes have been consistent for at least twenty years. This particular model has a nice stiff brim, a sturdy tie and is ventilated so It can be used on hot or cold days. We're fans of other models as well.Highly recommended.

I'm a petite woman. The circumference of my head is about 21.5. I bought one of these at a local store a few years ago and it is the best hat I've ever worn. Surprised to find out that this is a men's hat because a size Small fits me like a glove. I always have a hard time finding hats that truly fit me. I get compliments on this hat all the time. I like it so much that I decided to buy another one. My local store didn't have them anymore and it was harder to find online that I thought it would be. I found it here on Amazon and ordered the size Small. It doesn't fit quite as well as the other one I have which is a bit disappointing, but it's no so big that I have to stuff a bunch of foam in the sweat band to get it to fit. I did end up buying the cork hat sizing strips here on Amazon and they are much better than the foam ones (a bit pricey, but trust me, worth it). All in all, I'm happy with the hat and glad I got it, even if it is a tiny bit bigger than the one I already have.

UPDATED BELOWThis is a decent hat of this type, but by no means the best.My basis of comparison is the similar but somewhat cheaper Redhead brand of hat available at certain outdoors outfitter shops. I purchased this Dorfman hat because the other simply is not available in 3X.Comparing the two, I find that this hat seems to have better finish insofar as the construction of the hat itself . . . the Redhead has extra wasted material in places whereas this one is clean. The leather strap is decent. However, the leather holder (as compared to a wood bead) is virtually useless. I have placed the Redhead leather and bead on it and it is a vast improvement.More importantly, however, the mesh is much weaker in this hat. The actual hole size is not too different if at all, but the mesh is lighter and finer here, and as a result this hat simply will not hold any shape. Placed on a table top down, it collapses. Placed on the head, it immediately appears crumpled. The mesh is also much more see-through than the Redhead hat, so that hair and skin are visible. If I could, I would place the Redhead mesh on this hat.The brim is of good size and adequate stiffness, though I will be scotchgarding in the hopes of avoiding the problems others have noted. The crown is of good height and construction.All in all, it is adequate, but I will be having to make too many modifications to bring it up to the Redhead standard to give it five stars.UPDATE: The hat barely survived daily wear last summer and was always a hassle insofar as keeping shape of mesh and brim. I used hairspray and stiffen-quik on the mesh but that barely held, and the mesh eventually took on stains. The brim itself became soft and shapeless near the forehead and so the front would not retain shape properly. When I pulled it out to use it this year I realized I just couldn't bear to wear it in public, so it is now relegated to yardwork. I will try a Henschel 5320-95.

The hat is just as advertised. The mesh helps keep my head cool and the top and rim are of substantial material.My only complaint is that the wooden bead made to thread the two ends of the chin strap was too loose, and it was lost within a week. It needs a change to allow the adjustment of the strap without losing it.

It's a light weight vented hat with chin strap. Great sunshade for whole head and breathable. I bought two, no appreciable wear on #1 yet. I'd buy it again.
