We ordered these bongo drums for our 5-year-old grandson for Christmas. I also order large soft-headed drumsticks he can use on them, and he was able to make great music along with his older cousins. The drum seems sturdy enough to last for a long time. When he wasn't playing with them one of the adults at the party were playing either with the sticks or with their fingers.

I don't have that much experience with bongos but it does sound like a bongo. It is not harsh like a toy. just be mindful that the body is made of metal and the rubber feet can be easily removed. A child might pick the rubber feet and become a choking hazard. If you remove the rubber feet the threads will be exposed and could potentially be a cutting hazard.

For six months, my granddaughter loved to tap on boxes, containers, the table, etc. So, I thought.....why not bongos? I looked for a beginners' set and found these; very reasonably priced, sturdy and perfect for small children (my granddaughter is two). If her interest continues, I will eventually get her a better set, but for now, you can't go wrong.

This was purchased for a birthday present to my son. It looks great it's a nice weight and was very well built the only complaint I have is it doesn't exactly sound the way it should. Doesn't seem to make a difference to him though.
