This tool is just the right weight for men or women, it is sharp and well made. We took ours all over Southern Nevada and used it in a variety of conditions and hardness of rocks, still looks like new. Buy the cover/belt hanger even if you do not plan to hang it from a belt to protect the tool and your car/transport container.

This is a great and tough hammer. It feels good in the hand, very comfortable, nice grip, great balance. It's a great size for larger rocks, and where a bit more weight and force is required. One end is pointed for prying, the other end is either serrated or "cross hatched" depending on what you order. The metal is hard, resist deformation, keeps it's shape. The hammer has a very nice and attractive finish. The hammer does cost a little more, but provides much more value than the light weight Chinese made hammers with the tube handle that always seems to bend and where the rubber handle causes blisters and will come loose when using it. So the value is definitely there.

Estwing has no parallel. This is the third leather grip Estwing tool I own and all are heirlooms.

This is a great tool that will last forever if you take the time to do as another reviewer suggested for the Estwing Sportsman’s Axe and sand off the varnish on the handle. It’s a clear shellac that will inevitably crack and the first thing you need to do after removing all the stickers is to get the factory varnish off. I’m so glad to have found the description for how to do this that I decided to write a review for the rock hammer in order to share it:First you want to tape off the metal part of the handle and use 100 grit sand paper to completely sand off the varnish on the grip (it will become lighter in color as you sand). Then rub neatsfoot oil on the leather multiple times daily until it stops soaking in. (It takes about 3-4 days and several coats of oil.) For a more detailed description of the process look for A. Swenson’s review for the 14†Sportsman Axe called “This is the real deal!†(Definitely worth reading, it’s a much better explanation of the process than what I’ve provided here.) Admittedly this is a bit of extra work for something you just purchased but if you’re like me and frequently customizing your tools, it’s actually pretty enjoyable. Lighter fluid works well for removing stubborn adhesive left over from the stickers and I used steel wool to polish out any scratches.I purchased this rock hammer after buying the axe and both have held up great with the sanding & oil process! I don’t expect to need another one in my lifetime, and I really enjoy the look and feel of this model compared to others out there.

I went fossil hunting and some of the fossils were really embedded in the ground, this rock hammer looks undamaged after several whacks at the rocks, overall it gets the job done and i highly recommend this as a beginner if you have extra money, it’s worth every penny!

First time I went out rock hounding I took a rip hammer and a chisel. The look invited a lot of unsolicited advice, some was decent though. Went back out with this hammer, nothing but nods of approval. The tool is perfectly tempered to deliver a bi facing whack, and the point is capable of getting a grip on some surprisingly small crevices. Right tool for the job, solid construction.

The hammer itself looks great, feels sturdy, and I'm excited to use it when the time comes (when a new one comes in the mail). The packaging and effects of, not so thrilled. This was sent in one of the thin, white, bubble lined packages. I noticed the corner was torn through and when I opened the package, the plastic safety piece that is meant to keep the pointy end of the hammer less pointy was smashed and ultimately useless as it laid there at the bottom of the bag. The steel part of the hammer has blemishes as tools sometimes do, but because of the packaging it's hard to tell what happened there. The handle also has a few dents in it. All-in-all, great looking tool, I just think the packaging choice for items like this should be reevaluated.

Ich habe mir diesen Geologenhammer im Rahmen meines Studiums gekauft. Der Hammer ist super verarbeitet, liegt gut in der Hand und sieht schick aus.
