Bottom line, this will not work to hook up a FireWire HD. I did not read reviews and instead spent a quick $7 on this adapter thinking I could easily hook up an old FireWire hard drive and organize some old files. I plugged it in and immediately got messages saying to unplug and all my other hard drives automatically disconnected. Fortunately nothing bad happened. Only then, after the fact, I read that a FireWire device uses too much power to run through a USB. So DUH, this adapter will not work! Hopefully you read this before wasting the money. I tossed it in the trash so some other sorry sucker doesn’t get it! I did a lot of research and ordered a new cord plus a thunderbolt adapter. Fingers crossed that the $40 purchase does the trick.

This will not work to hook up a FireWire HD. I hoped I could easily hook up my old FireWire drive. I plugged it in and immediately got messages saying to unplug. FireWire devices use too much power to run through a USB port. This adapter will not work, read this before wasting the money… Garbage … Junk…

So I purchased this yesterday, and it doesn't work. I grabbed the adapter to use with my Motu Ultralite, and it doesn't work. I used the same firewire cable on my desktop, and it works like a charm. I tried to use it on my laptop with the adapter, and it's a no go.

Should have read reviews first; this adapter cannot channel the power from a firewire through a USB port. Impossible. Thank goodness I can return via Amazon Prime. Save yourself the trouble.

After ordering, I reviewed the firewire spec and it is not possible to have a USB - Firewire adapter due to specifics of the standards. This is just plastic and metal, it doesn't provide any functionality
