Absolutely fantastic. Clean sound, good power, fully integrateable into a stack thanks to the rca, usb c, coa, and optic ports on the back. Even as a standalone unit, it's wonderful. Using it with the Hifiman Sundaras rn, the bass knob makes them punchy, but it's very very clean. Not bloated at all. The treble knob is quite subtle, by comparison, but definitely works. The build is awesome. Quite frankly, nothing is better than this for under $100. Audiophile seal of approval.

This little DAC is a gem for the money.instead of making this review a long story, I am providing (subjective) pro's and cons.Tested as driving a Fosi TB10D as well as a wired headset.Inputs: nothing else to wish for! usd-c, Coaxial and Optical. do not forget the mic 3.5mm input for the gamers (and perhaps people working on their Mac/PC and on online meetings.outputs: 3.5mm headphone, RCA and usb-c.build: metal, nice and sturdy. small footprint! Bass/Treble buttons have a neutral "clikc" position which I do appreciate! multi functional volume know (on/off, volume and input selector) keeps the looks simple.audio quality: I used a laptop via usb-c and a DVD player via Optical. the sound signature is pretty much neutral to me. the bass and treble controls will give you the ability to dial in the sound to your liking if you use a headset or an amp that does not have bass and treble control.Pro's:small footprint (perfect for travel), good build quality, all inputs neededgood sound quality, no audible noise. powerful enough to drive most headsets out there"Cons":for aesthetic reasons I would like to see the color of the unit (and size) to be identical to other products made by Fosi (ex: TB10D; the one I use in my desktop setup with E... BT6.2 speakers). Again, this is a personal opinion and I know it contradicts my Pro regarding the size.Overall, for the money this is a great unit, especially taking the price in consideration!Fosi did it again!

Any of these are going to greatly improve the sound over plugging your headphones directly into the mini-jack on a computer.Listening was done with a few different headphones but mostly with beyerdynamic DT 700 PRO X Closed-Back Studio Headphones. Music source was a laptop connected to the DAC/Headphone Amp via USB. If an external power supply was included, I used that. If not, power came via USB.I've kept notes on my impressions brief and included comparisons amongst the DAC/Amp's in this list. They are listed below in my order of preference with my favorites at the top. If you want flowery vocabulary I'm sure in depth reviews are available out there on the web.Headphones make the greatest difference in sound - spend more on them, if necessary. The DAC/Amp is secondary but does add its own flavor to the music.---iFi Zen DAC V2 | Desktop Digital Analog Converter(Listening only with "TRUEBASS" off.)Very good.Slightly better than the FiiO K7. Better vocal clarity and slightly fuller bass.I ended up comparing this with the FX-Audio DAC-X6 head to head, which continued to surprise me as I put it up against significantly more expensive competitors. Across several hours and many pieces of music, I prefer the iFi... but the difference is infinitesimal. Possibly the iFi has a little more punch to the bass? Maybe a bit more space ans separation? If you're working to a budget, get the FX-Audio and put the extra cash towards better headphones.FX-Audio DAC-X6 Mini HiFi 2.0 Digital Audio Decoder DACThis thing is good. Surprisingly good. I ended up putting it head-to-head with amps costing three times its price.Slightly warmer sound, with slightly less detail in the vocals than the iFi Zen Air, but more space in the music, and more enjoyable to listen to. Slightly better clarity than the Topping.FiiO K7 Full Balanced HiFi DAC Headphone AmplifierThis is indeed better than the K5 version. Vocals are more lifelike. And a particular emphasis on the mid-treble heard in the K5 is absent. There is more separation between the instruments.Very close call with the iFi V2, with my preference going to the iFi for better vocal clarity and slightly fuller bass.iFi Zen Air DACNot quite as good as the V2, but close. Closer than the FiiO K5 is to the K7. There is, again, a comparative emphasis in mid-treble and the vocals get a bit lost. The sound is slightly thin compared to rivals at this price point.FiiO K5 Pro Headphone Amps Portable Desktop DAC and AmplifierNot quite as good as the K7, but at half the price one cannot really complain. Vocals are not quite as lifelike and there is more mid-treble - but not in a good way.Topping DX1 Mini Stereo DAC Headphone Amplifier ComboVery good little unit. Bass is slightly overemphasized.Fosi Audio K5 Pro Gaming DAC Headphone AmplifierI thought this unit was DOA. Turns out that you must long press the volume knob to turn it on. (Short press to select input.)Not terrible, but not as musical as the others in this test. Also, the only one with bass and treble knobs. And only a mini-jack - no 1/4" jack.Pro-Ject Head Box S2 DigitalThis DAC/Amp had an issue that makes it unlistenable. The sound is very nice... but... there's some faint static. Only in the music, not in silence. A faint crackling.... Can't have that.

I have used iBuds Pro, Shure SE215 in-ears, Sennheiser HD 650, AKG K553 MKII and a group of cheap earbuds. The Fosi improved the clarity and separation of the sound coming from my Mac and made all of the headphones sound better and it handled them all well. I was able to pick up subtle nuances and sounds that I had not heard listening straight from the Mac sound card. It does not sound as good as my Universal Audio interface, but I wasn't expecting it to for less than 10th of the price. It does sound amazing though and is hitting way above it cost. It is a quality built metal chassis, small form, Volume, Bass and Treble buttons that I love. I like tinkering with the sound depending on the song and this makes it very easy. Volume boost is good and can get loud without distorting. It's not blow your ears loud, but definitely louder than the Mac by itself. I am glad I found this, it made listening to my computer and phone much more pleasurable and is small enough to take with me.

I have used this DAC for a little over 3 months now. At least once per day it will randomly shut off. At first i gave it the benefit of the doubt and assumed it was something with the power cable and/or my PC. After 3 months of trouble shooting, powering it from a separate USB port (not from my PC) and using other cables etc. It still shuts off intermittently. Now it has shut off and I cannot get it to turn back on no matter what i try. I just recently got it turned on and a prompt on my PC came on to say "the usb device has malfunctioned and cannot be recognized by windows" and now it seems i have a little $60 black brick to look at.

OK Hands up...although I'm a serious music-lover (hence "MusicMan"...) I am also a serious Gadget Geek and when I saw this little beauty on Amazon I just had to have one - especially as I already have the Fosi Audio DAC-Q4 and being delighted with it....Out of the box I am immediately impressed with the quality of the K5 PRO, it feels and looks gorgeous.....silvery brushed aluminium....also included are three cables, a USB data transfer/power cable, a splitter cable to separate the mic. and headphone inputs and an optical (Toslink) cable.I get the unit connected firstly to my computer and power up the K5 PRO, a 3-second press on the right-hand MODE/VOL knob and there is a reassuring "click" as a relay closes internally and the left hand statue LED illuminates to (by default) USB input. (Each subsequent press moves the input to the next input selection). Worth mentioning here that this K5 PRO only requires one cable connection to my PC for power and data transfer whereas my older Q4 need 2 cables, one for power and a second for data transfer.....a bit cumbersome and the K5 PRO is much better in this respect....I must confess to not being particularly a gamer, I found the K5 very satisfactory and it worked very well....someone else with more experience in this area might like to add comments....meanwhile I will concentrate on the Audio quality on all the inputs on the K5PRO.USB PC CONNECTION.No problem with the PC recognizing the K5 PRO.....With the Bass and Treble control set at 12 O'clock I cue up one of my favourite songs, WAV of Emmylou Harris "Kern River" and immediately here a very clean, clear sound, crisp mids and highs and good firm Bass line.....next a 24/192 Hi Res of Roger Waters "The Bravery of being Out of Range".....again impressive good clean sound. (By the way I use Audio Technica ATH-WD900 cans plus a pair of OneOdio ones as well....both sounded excellent.I decide, out of interest, to compare this K5 PRO with my older Q4 (see the 5th picture for size comparison)......first thing I notice is an improvement is the Bass response of the K5 PRO, slightly less "lumpy" and also the mid-range on the K5 PRO is cleaner and a little more "forward in the mix" compared with the Q4....a smoother frequency response. All in all a really good start for the K5 PRO....let's move on to ....OPTICAL DIGITAL INPUTI particularly love watching Music videos on TV so I connect the K5 PRO to my TV via the Toslink cable and play Pink Floyd "P.U.L.S.E. "Comfortably Numb".....superb!! After detecting a very slight latency, easily cured by adjusting my TV sound setting, I thoroughly enjoy this great recording....top marks here....moving on to the S/PDIF input...S/PDIF COAX INPUT I connect my FiiO M15S S/PDIF on the 3.5mm output to the coax input on the K5 PRO and run a Hi-RES 24/96 recording of Eagles "Hotel California" and I'm immediately in the groove man!! again, top marks.By the way at all times the e.q. settings are at 12 O'clock and tests show these work very well with improvements in treble being handy on older "duller" mp3 files...I have a few at 256mbps....IN SUMMARYCan I recommend this Fosi Audio K5 PRO device?? You bet,Any improvements??....yes perhaps a 4.4mm balanced headphone out would be nice and I found the indents on the e.q. controls not always easy to see and I would like to have a slightly larger volume control knob like on the Q4....but really I am splitting hairs as this is a really good little DAC with excellent sound quality.Highly recommended and I hope this helps you.
