I am a professional machinist who is slowly building my tool collection. I looked into this gauge because the man I am shadowing had a Mitutoya that basically looked identical. He paid over $400 for his. I bought this thinking I would have to return it but thought it was worth a try. When I got it, worked and still works flawlessly. Hitting +/- .001 dim with ease. You will need to re zero when you change out rods but you should do that anyway to ensure accurate measurements every time. I have and will continue to reccomend this product. For under 100, give it a try.

The movement sticks & binds. Unacceptable for a $20.00 or a $1,000.00 measuring device.. Am very disappointed as I have other Fowler measuring tools that are accurate, friction free & work fine. Will return for a replacement that hopefully will work properly. I like the way it's built & placed an order for a replacement. If the 2nd one works as it should I will certainly change my rating.OK Folks I'm changing my rating from 1star to 4 stars. My replacement gauge came & unlike the 1st one I received this one has a stick-free plunger mechanism that actually returns to "0" on it's own. I took one star away as many of the items were rattling inside the box & I thought uh oh sounds like damage but all seems OK so far. They need to put some packing material inside the case to keep items in place. Haven't checked on accuracy yet but I'm sure that it'll do what it was designed to do. Great deal for the price & would recommend anyone needing a depth type gauge to get this.

Dial depth gage works as it should. Rods lengths are inconsistent, so indicator needs to be reset to zero when changing rods, but only for a few thousandths. Not a big deal, I just use a gage block on a surface plate. This is a must-have tool if you manufacture gate inserts regularly.

Despite that this is billed as being able to measure from zero inches to twenty-two inches, it only measures from 0" with the very smallest/shortest nib. And that point, which the description would lead you to believe is 0.078", is actually 0.2".The needle point and 0.078" point both measure from a minimum of 0.995". So if you're probing holes smaller than 0.2" (which is the specific application for which I bought this device), you WILL NOT be able to measure from 0" - you can measure ONLY from 1" minimum!I've conferred with Fowler tech support and confirmed that this is a limitation of the device. Also, for reference - since I don't see it anywhere in the description: the shaft size is 3/8", and the threading is 4-48. M2.5 points WILL NOT FIT this device.
