After reading reviews, I almost didnt order. I called the manufacturer about trying to purchase a wooden case for the item to be shipped in. Its not avaialble in a wooden case. I rolled the dice and ordered it. The straight edge came inside of three seperate boxes and was in perfect condition. Maybe the distributers changed their shipping methods after complaints. Very satisfied.

While looking for a solid straight edge for setting up a new powermatic table saw, I came across this listed for 25.00. For the price, and against my better judgement if I were to base this purchase solely on reviews, I went ahead and ordered it. Packaging was HORRIBLE! It came in a 4”X12”X4’ box with no packing material inside. Literally none. It had put a hole in the box and had dinged one corner. Lucky for me, it was on the top edge. Its amazing some UPS package handler was not guillotined while processing this item. It was packed like a hot dog in a hallway. Upon initial inspection i was very unimpressed. Because of packaging, a slightly damaged corner, and a very unsightly “wave” in the metal. It appears as if a 4” section of the length was very slightly below the ground surface. This is a cosmetic issue, but I expect more from Fowler. Especially if your paying the list price. However, I took it to my local machine shop and checked it on a surface plate certified at .0014 (fourteen ten thousandths). We illuminated the back side bottom with a high lumen LED. ZERO visible light showing. That should be expected from this item. Sadly for Fowler, it was actually a surprise based on other reviews and initial inspection. I would like to give it 5 stars but cannot based upon pathetic packaging and mediocre finish. For 25.00 im thrilled. If I had payed full retail it would most certainly been returned, based upon finish alone. Good luck!**please note, this is directional. Meaning only one edge is ground straight and flat. There are 2 VERY small roll marks. Both are tiny tiny little arrows pointing to the machined edge**

Should have read the reviews first. Came bent, just like in the other review.

I am returning this straight edge because it isn't straight, and the packaging was terrible. The outer mailing box was undamaged, but the heavy straight edge had torn through both ends of its slipcase, ripping the flap off the open. That flap was loose in the box. The straight edge had no hard, protective case, just a pressed cardboard slipcase. It had been put in the mailing box with a few other items, and a single piece of packing paper was put on top of all of them, nothing on the ends. Worst of all though, it just isn't straight. I was checking both the narrow edge and the broad edge, and there is a significant bow to the broad face. Not just easily visible, but obvious to the naked eye. This is unacceptable for a precision tool, especially in my application where I will be laying it down flat and using the narrow edge as a guide to scribe a straight line. With this bow it will either sit proud of the surface or rock on it. I will attempt to pack it better for the return trip, especially the ends, if there's enough room in the box for additional padding. I will also attempt to source a better straight edge (probably Starrett) locally, as several people have reported problems with Amazon's packaging of heavy objects like this.
