As another reviewer correctly pointed out, this would work for a horizontal rail. However, the u-clamps do not fit when used with stairs, there is full 1/4†gap (which is very significant in this application). The product looks nice and appears well-made, but the engineering is poor to have such an oversight. Description needs to state “Not for stairs†or the engineers need to redesign to make it a universal application. Unfortunately I realized this too late and already have holes in the walls where I installed these so I’m trying to devise a work-around that won’t be unsightly. Meanwhile I sit a second day with an uninstalled railing while I sort this out or start again with a different product.

Our prior handrail brackets were 20 plus year old builders grade junk that was poorly installed (maybe not so poor if they lasted 20 plus years). We recently finished the basement so it sees more activity. The wobbly brackets had to go! Removed the old, did some wall repair where they were dug into the drywall and then installed these. They came out perfectly and I am confident that they will hold up to any happenings on the stairs including all the teenage visitors.

As pointed out by others, the U bracket is not able to attach to the rail at an angle.

I’ve updated a lot of the fixtures in my 1970’s home because I like the nickel look better than brass, not to mention things were old, worn and outdated. I had not updated the railing brackets going to my basement because I never found brackets that looked that much better than the standard ones I had until now. I really like the color, the design, and I love that they are sturdy and well made. I figured that I would have to fill holes and repaint because I thought there was no way they would fit the exact same holes as the ones I had. Well, I was so pleasantly surprised that they do, in fact, have the exact same screw positions so no repair required. I was able to very simply remove the old brackets and put these back in the exact same spot. They are such a nice upgrade, and I can’t believe how easy it was to do. I love them!
