...great for science projects. It took less than 1 second to begin charring old snail shells, maybe two before flames were seen. I was expecting it to be thicker just from the image shown, but that's an optical illusion...it is the 2mm they promised (it's clear in their picture of it in someone's hands holding it at an angle). 2mm is a reasonable thickness, not too heavy, not too expensive, not too fragile.Someone wondered about pennies, so I couldn't resist an experiment. I placed a new object (cheap materials, not to be confused with the older copper ones) over a crack in the sidewalk, donned sun-glasses and held the focal point as best I could for 3 minutes. I was forced to end my experiment at this point, because a furry critter became very curious and I didn't want them to get their paws anywhere near the area, or hurt their eyes.My observations are:1) You really need better than sunglasses for eye protection. Don't even try without at least two pairs. Think of it in terms of welding.2) these new objects are weird. It still seemed flat on the top when I had to quit, yet when I picked it up a little later (after removing the furry critter to a safer area), I saw that it had indeed melted into the crack even though the top surface remained fairly flat - only drooping over the gaps on the two edges where the crack was. The top surface was also noticeably thinner. I surmise that this lens effectively softened the two outer layers of material, making them pliable, and melted the middle layer of material, allowing it to pool in the center where the crack was.In short, this lens can indeed, melt metal.

This is a powerful lens! I didn't get this so much for it's magnification ability as I did for it's heating ability. The size of this give a better intensity of sun in one spot than the smaller lenses. This will light firecrackers and burn weeds. I was even able to melt a copper/zinc penny. That's hot! I couldn't melt glass but it broke glass. When focusing the sun, try both sides. One side works better than the other. Using one side shines an X , using the other shines a dot. It's a start but I'd like one bigger yet.

This is a longer focal length lens than many 300mm lenses. That means the focused sun spot is larger and not as hot, if you know your optical equations. I measured focal length, pretty accurate.

I got this to see if I can use it to make a do-it -your homemade solar oven, I have seen plans online for solar ovens just using reflective material like aluminum foil and some that use a lens something like this, I am researching to see about checking any plans that might use both.I tested it by taking outside in the sunlight and it took only about 30 seconds (maybe less) for a piece of paper to get lit up, so be very careful not to leave this sitting anywhere that sunlight can reach it when not in use.

Tried this and magnifies many things nicely, used to look at a crystallin rock magnified nice for me, but trying to show on camera has negligible effects. Could also start a fire if put in sun, best to keep in dark place or put in some kind of sleeve.

To be honest, this lens was kind of an impulse order. I've never handled such a large lens before. It works great. It came well packed and so it does not have any scratches or defects. Images though it are bright and clear. It is stiff enough not to bend too easily. I'm sure there are many projects that one could use this for such as fire starting, solar cooking, solar heating, and low vision aid to name just a few. Five stars.

I got this for my kids' "science kit" - random items I've pulled together, like thermochromic crystal sheets, magnetic field viewer sheets, polarized film, prisms, diffraction grating, magnets, gallium, etc. etc. This was a great addition - in direct sunlight, at focal length, it got hot enough virtually instantly to burn mildew off of concrete, or to ignite flammable objects. We have some experimenting to do to see just how high of a temperature we can generate - I'm hoping to melt a penny (Most I've seen used a much bigger fresnel lens for that, but given the temperatures and insolation lately, it might be doable).Great quality, feels durable - I was expecting something thinner and more brittle - quite pleased with the quality of the product.
