I'm not sure that there is a universal name for the many different types of wok rings which have appeared for sale recently. But the best of them go far to address a challenge that anyone who uses a wok for Asian cooking faces: heat. Most woks on the market these days have a flat bottom. Very convenient for a typical Western stove, but disappointing in terms of their ability to generate and maintain the high heat needed for truly successful Asian cooking.Every commercial Asian kitchen uses a round bottom wok, with a flame source far more powerful than residential building codes permit. This wok ring replaces a stove's original cast iron burner top, and will cradle a round bottom wok directly over gas jets, allowing flames to disperse up the sides of the wok and creating noticeably more heat. Not quite as hot as a commercial kitchen, but a marked improvement. This translates to better Mongolian Beef, crisper General Tso chicken, and generally improves the results of anything it is used for. It's a clever design that I now use every day.Recommended.

I like the concept but if you need to move the pan or pot around a bit (like a wok) then this is not a good solution. With that said, it is made of heavy metal and you can get it to stay on the existing burners but again you can't move it around too much.

This is a nice wok ring. The legs that hold up the wok are wide enough and provides good support for my wok. This is still made of cast iron, so it is still on the rough side when it comes to the surface, so this will be scratching the surface of the pan or wok – if that matters. While there are supports on the underside to handle 4 or 5 prongs on the gas burner, they are not necessarily wide enough to fit all stove tops. For mine, they do not sit within the allotted space. But because all 4 prongs are resting within the gaps, it remains stable on top of the burner. Overall, this is a good quality ring.

This gives better stability to pots and pans on modern hobs. Perfect.

This is made of black cast iron and its good quality. I use this on my stove and it comes in handy as it prevents my pots from slipping more now.

I got this to allow me to use my wok on a portable butane stove as the rounded bottom is not ideal. It works really well! It sits solidly on top of the burner with no wobble, and conforms to the contour of my wok perfectly. It is solid cast iron so should have no issues with warping, and should provide plenty of longevity. The only thing is it is not very smooth, and it has scratched up the outside of my wok a bit, but not terribly.

I ordered this hob ring reducer in the hope it might solve the problem of small pans - particularly those with heavy handles - toppling off the standard 4 ‘prong' grid if the handle happens to be aligned with the gap between the prongs. The reducer ring engaged well with our 4 prong grid, there is a fair bit of clearance - inevitable to ensure compatibility with a wide range of grids - meaning it can move around a little but at no point did it feel like it would fall off, and it remains well centralised over the burner. The sloped wedges at the outer edges are useful for woks - something I was surprised there was no mention of on the product page - but do restrict the maximum pan diameter you can safely place on this ring reducer to just under 16cm. Large pans are perfectly stable enough without this reducer so this isn’t an issue for me.Although this product doesn’t completely eliminate the potential for small pans to tip it significantly improves stability and thus reduces the likelihood of this occurring. It is worth noting that due to its thickness and the fact it sits directly over the flame, this does get hotter - and stays hot for longer - than the standard grid would, so if you wish to remove it soon after use you will need gloves. Personally I now just leave it in situ on one of the small burners, and only move it to a large burner to use it with a wok.The product listing describes this as 2 in 1 and one of the images shows 2 separate pieces titled ‘Ring for Pot’ and ‘Ring for Small Pan’. As a result I don’t think I will be the only one to initially think this product would consist of 2 pieces, however it is actually just a single piece. Presumably this image is an attempt to show how this product can perform the function of 2 products, but it’s not very clear.
