A Generac XL 4000 generator had a broken valve spring retainer that is not available anywhere so I bought this kit and it replaced both valves, springs, retainers and keepers and head gasket. Should have included a valve cover gasket too, but for the price and my generator running, it was a great value!

Excellent kit! Virtually everything you need to replace the original crappy valve spring clips. Remember to either save or replace the following gaskets: intake to carb, valve cover and exhaust. Also, mark your linkage holes, push rods and rocker arms for easy reassembly. Torque head bolts in a star pattern, first to 15 ft lbs then 22 ft lbs. Note that only the intake valve has a valve guide seal. Before removing the old valves from the head, debur the ends where the clips sit. This is to prevent damage to valve guides, as the valve ends have burs especially if clip broke. Also pay attention to the thrust washer between the valve spring and the head and debur if necessary.

Bought this kit when my low hour generator broke the cheapo original one piece valve spring retainer into 3 pieces on the intake side. I was noticing some valve float prior to it breaking, evidenced by gas blowing back into the air cleaner. The replacement springs are much stiffer than the ones they replaced. I recommend cleaning the paint off of the new springs with brake parts cleaner, the paint wipes off easily with it and it keeps it from ending up in your oil. The old valves need to have the burrs ground or filed off of them where the 1 piece retainers were prior to removal or you will damage the valve guides. I lapped in the new valves with valve grinding compound. I installed the valve locks and retainers with the valve head on my knee with the head off of the engine, no special tools required this way. You pretty much force the springs into full coil bind to drop the locks in so I don't know how you could use a spring compressor anyways, unless you made something with a lever on the rocker stud and compressed air in the cylinder with the head on the engine.My only complaint knocking a star off of this kit is that the valve seal did not fit my 7.8hp engine. It was too wide to fit the boss. I had to reuse my original, there is only one in these engines and it's on the intake valve. It is a nice kit otherwise, and all the parts were in Generac bags. My generator seems to be running a lot more smoothly now. This job took me most of a day sitting on the ground to complete, and most of it was fighting with the engine covers.

This kit was all inclusive to fix the known issue with the Generac stamped steel valve retainers. As this is a redesign, you can't just use the retainers from this kit, you have to remove the head and replace valves, springs, seal, and retainers. It was an easy job. Took a couple of hours and I had my son do it for experience with me overseeing his efforts.

Had everything I needed to get the generator back running. If you have one of these motors that has the stamp metal clips is definitely worth the change. It requires some mechanical know how to assemble disassemble but that shouldn't need to be said.

the head gasket was damaged in the package, didn't find out until i needed it after all the other parts were installed. Amazon would not replace just the one item even though it is sold a' la carte. hand to purchase the new one with no reimbursement, booo!
