The Gold Tone GME-4 is a solid body 4-string electric mandolin that is great for Texas swing, folk, and even rock n' Roll. The maple radiused fingerboard plays very quickly. The stacked humbucking pickup is extremely quite for recording and includes tone and volume control.

I have been playing mandolin (mostly acoustic) for almost 30 years and had two other electric mandolins. The GME-4 is beautiful and and apparently very well-made. It is a joy to play and has better tonal balance among the strings than my other two electrics (which were also inexpensive). One apparently unique feature of this instrument (compared to others in this price range) is that the jack for the cord is on lower edge rather than the front of the instrument where the plug can interfere with playing and mar the intrument's appearance. The neck is a bit narrower than a typical mandolin so that the G string is very close to the end of the frets; bending of the G must be up (toward the E) rather than down. With normal playing the G string does not slip off the frets, however. My hand adapted to the closer spacing of the strings quite readily. The gig bag is very cheap (the pull taps on both zippers snapped into to pieces almost immdediatley) but I didn't buy this for the gig bag.

Really great instrument! I've had it for about 6 months now. Sounds good and plays easy.I like tuning down, but the low string really can't go below E. I had it at D for a month or so, adjusted the saddle every few days to pull back as far as possible and still came up short (sharp) around the 7th fret. At the very longest it can go, it works perfectly for low E (Yank Rachell E B F# C# or others). I took off a star for that. If I'd known it would be such a pain to tune low, I would've waited until the 5-string came back in stock. A few of the frets aren't flush with the fretboard, but there's no buzzing anywhere, even up past the 15th fret. I put together a set of light strings that works very well with no truss rod adjustment (36 - 24 - 13 - 9.5, ultra-light ~15-16lb tension each) and so far I haven't noticed anything wrong with the neck.If you are thinking about buying this, you probably already know what you want. It doesn't have a 5th course and it doesn't have doubled strings. If you want something in between a mandolin and an electric guitar, this is perfect. Portable, sturdy, and well-made.

This Gold Tone is a little gem! Beautiful fit and finish. Great tone. I needed to set the intonation a little and lower the action but this is to be expected and was no big deal to me. I love it. What else can I say? Oh, one thing....buy one!

The instrument is very good. My problems are with the ad that says the body is maple. It is not. It’s aAlder. Second, the mandolin arrived poorly packaged. The outer box was held together with one single piece of tape and was torn halfway open in the front. The inner box containing the instrument had no external bubble wrap around it. It was free to move a foot in all directions. I was surprised there was no damage to the instrument. The impression was that the vendor had no respect for their own product. The instrument itself is a little jewel. If you choose to buy one consider a different seller.

Remember this is a single 4 string Mandolin, not double 4 strings ( 8 strings) It comes with kinda heavy strings 11-40 and the action is set pretty high. The pickup, volume and tone controls are typical and it sounds good thru an amp. The neck and fretboard are unfinished so they will get dirty. That being said once I lowered the action this baby plays like a charm, its hard to put it down ! The strings are BALL END, not LOOP END. The bridge and saddles are adjustable so setting intonation should not be an issue. When I finally get around to changing strings to a lighter gauge I will also add 2 coats of clear satin poly to the fretboard which will prevent the fretboard from getting dirty. I purchased this GME 4 to use for quiet unplugged early morning or late night practice , its exactly what I was looking for. The build quality is also pretty darn good, no complaints. Highly recommended but it will need a setup.
