Product Description

Regardless of how clean you think your paint is, there are still contaminants stuck on the paint that you need to remove before waxing or polishing your paint. Paint cleaning clay leaves behind an ultra-smooth surface that will make your wax adhere better and last longer. It also makes the wax much easier to remove, reducing your elbow grease substantially. Clay is safe for all paint and also works great on glass to get it squeaky clean. To use, just remove the clay from the wrapper, spray the paint's surface with Speed Shine (acts as a lubricating fluid), and rub the clay back and forth until there is no drag. This means your paint is clean. Unlike other cleaners and polishes, no buffing or hard circular motions are necessary. Takes literally one fourth the time as it would using paint cleaner. Follow up with best of show wax and your paint will look stunning. The large 8 ounce (226 gram) bar cleans about 7 vehicles, depending on the amount of surface contamination. Try this clay - the results are amazing.

For paint that’s super smooth, there is no substitute for Griot’s Garage Paint Cleaning Clay. Even if you think your paint is clean, there are sure to be contaminants embedded in the surface that need to be removed before polishing or waxing. Remove these embedded contaminants and prepare your paint to look its best. The results will amaze you.

Why Use Paint Cleaning Clay?

Oils, dirt, brake dust, tar, and acid rain deposits form tiny particles that stick to your paint. You can’t always see these contaminants, but you can usually feel them by running your hand gently across the painted surface.

How Do You Use Paint Cleaning Clay?

Paint Cleaning Clay and Speed Shine work together to remove embedded contaminants, preparing your paint for polishing and waxing. Speed Shine loosens debris and lubricates the surface, Paint Cleaning Clay grabs and holds the contaminants, lifting them safely away from your paint.

Four Steps to a Smooth Surface

  • Step 1 – Making sure the surface is clean and cool, first wet a small, kneaded piece of clay with Speed Shine, then wet a 2’x 2’ section of your paint with Speed Shine.
  • Step 2 – Move the Paint Cleaning Clay back and forth on the surface. You don’t need to press hard, just let the clay do the work for you. If the clay begins sticking, you can add more Speed Shine.
  • Step 3 – Wipe the area dry with a clean micro fiber or 100% cotton cloth.
  • Step 4 – When the piece of clay appears dirty, fold it into itself and knead again. Now you’re ready to move onto the next section.

It is amazing. I wash my car and it looks clean and then I use the clay and it removes a whole layer of grime. The finish feels much smoother afterwards. If I run a cloth over the car it glides across the paint.

Clay bar clean up work is something I never used to do but once I did it a few years ago to clean up some tree sap and bird stains on my wife's van, I became a believer. Waxing would simply not clear the paint but the clay bar did.I don't obsess over my cars but do keep them pretty clean as a general rule. I've discovered that even with a garage kept car that's washed regularly, the paint still accumulates contaminants. My cars definitely look better when cleaned with a clay bar and waxed. Feeling that smoooooth paint afterwards is also strangely satisfying.I've mostly used Mother's before since I could just pick it up at the auto parts place. Mother's worked fine but, even though this Griot's kit is more expensive, it's also a lot more material both in the spray and the clay. Not having done a side by side comparison I can't offer any statistical analysis but it absolutely seemed to me that this Griot's kit was much easier and faster. The spay bottle is a good shape and doesn't fall over. The sprayer itself can dispense a fine mist with reasonable control of the over spray. The clay seems to works fast and stays together. The results are good. They claim you can do 7 cars with this kit assuming they aren't too nasty. Having done both a large sedan (pretty clean) and an old Yukon SUV (pretty nasty) since I bought this, that 7 car estimate seems reasonable on both the clay and the spray. That would be only a little over $4 a car so this kit looks like a bargain to me. It's easier than what I was using and it's less expensive on a per car basis.I don't do a lot of reviews but this kit was a pleasant surprise. The quantity and quality in this kit make it worthy of five stars in my opinion.

I've never used clay before on a car but had read and watched many tutorials online. What clay does to your car is absolutely AMAZING! I purchased a used Infiniti G37 and the paint looked good, real good, when I took delivery of it. Upon washing it the first time and every time after, the car felt like there was sand on it still but the paint looked fine. I even tried to wax and compound out the "dirt". So I then said to myself that I'd give this clay a shot. Holy crap was this stuff amazing. I think as I cleaned the first area of my hood i said "Holy S%$#" out loud about 30 times. I was that impressed!Online tutorials show using something as a lubricant for the clay when working it and i used a mix of water in a spray bottle with a touch of car wash soap. Worked like a charm! Save your money for the other brands that offer a tiny bar and a bottle of spray and make your own lube and get a LOT more nearly twice as much. If you're not familiar with grams as most people aren't the other brand offers 160grams / 5 oz and spray for $20. The Griots is 8oz / 226 grams that's almost twice as much. You don't get the lubricant but you can make your own as long as you have an empty spray bottle (I used an old Method cleaning bottle that was empty) and car wash soap ( I used Armorall Car Wash Soap which i have a gallon of). So yes this is a deal.If you are afraid to clay your car, fear not, just keep the area wet after the car is clean and keep spraying while you wipe and the contaminants in the paint will disappear. I have absolutely no idea the science behind how clay works but it is unbelievable how well it works. As for how much of this stuff to use, I used a piece about half the size of a golf ball and did the hood and trunk. Judging the size of how much is left I have enough to probably clay multiple times over. I'm not a detailer, just a regular auto owner at home.I hope someone reads this review and it helps someone because claying is not hard, not expensive, and is life changing for your car!

It works as advertised. I have a 2002 Saab convertible. I washed it and then used this product on it. You spray it on and wipe it across the surface ( like washing a window). It really brought out the true color of the car. And helps keep it clean between washes.Im not sure it would be “ economical “ on a larger car though. I haven’t used ( or investigated) how to use the claybar yet so i cant speak to that.

When I needed a resupply of painting clay I knew exactly where to go. Ordered it and received it in a couple days. Item arrived in perfect condition. I've used other paint clay, but this is the Cadillac of paint clay. This is tried and true, Tier 1 clay. Plus, the price point is spot on.The clay does all the work. I use Griot's Speed Shine (Which smells great!) with the clay. {Griot's micro fiber clothes are amazing}. It does wonders for the clear coat and paint. Leaves the finish smooth as butter. Also, I put it in the microwave for ten seconds and it becomes really pliable. I break it off in sections, in case I drop it. I throw it away if I drop it. Based on my past experiences, Amazon has been cheaper than ordering from Griot's directly. They are located in Washington state. You can't beat Amazon prime. Especially for impulse buying. For whatever reason, this clay smells like Play Dough. Good memories of the simple life! Griot's has a lifetime warranty on their products. They are real friendly and a pleasure to speak with. I have never had a Griot's product that disappointed me. Thank you Amazon.Use this clay bar with confidence.

I used this instead of waxing my car this year and I’m happy with the result! I thoroughly washed my car before using it on my entire car, it looked perfectly clean, but the wax still picked up A LOT of contaminants. The clay is easy to work with and I only used about half of the bar to do my entire car. Plus, by remolding it after using it, it’s ready to go again. So, there is enough of it in the box to use it many times. It made my paint look almost factory, super shiny. I’m very happy with the result.

This stuff is unbelievable!! Originally, I purchased this for my windshield but I just purchased a new white car and after going through a car wash, it had left what I thought was scratches but turned out to be a sticky substance all over my hood. I couldn't get it off with a microfiber cloth but this clay rubbed it right off with very little pressure.
