This is basically a plastic tube with a spring and button-controlled clamps inside. It holds Hagoromo chalk perfectly and feels really nice in the hand. The spring is over-eager and wants to shoot the chalk out, and I do wish the cap would post, but I haven't lost it yet. (Unrelatedly, if you're not familiar with Hagoromo chalk, it's like writing with fair-trade unicorn horn. Give it a try.)Overpriced for what it is, but it's worth the ten bucks.

It works perfectly. The reason for four stars is because, since it works so well when I accidentally touch the button at the bottom of the pen the chalk pops out, & then my chalk falls on the floor and shatters into small pieces. Overall I'm happy with the purchase.

this holder is perfectly designed to hold ANY hagoromo chalk firmly in place. the release mechanism easily (but powerfully) shoots the chalk forward so there's never a need to dig and hunt for your loaded piece of chalk.is it more costly than other holders? yes, absolutely BUT other brands do not come with a megnetic, clip up feature or a strong grip that allows you to use your Hagoromo chalk down to the smallest of nubs. excellent product.

It’s certainly a nice chalk holder and the spring that pushes the chalk after use is high quality, but i was expecting a little more for what I paid. Due to its oblong shape (to my understanding not all versions of this product have this shape) you are unable to place the cap securely onto the back of the holder. Most important, after the chalk gets about half length, it begins to shake inside the holder, creating an uncomfortable writing experience thereafter. But if you want to look fancy, this is your product.

Great accessory to have, avoids getting chalk on hands. Writes nicely and no smudges.

I write a lot on blackboards and needed better chalk than the stuff you find at big box stores. I also wanted to find a good chalk holder that wasn't going to disappoint me. This is the PERFECT chalk holder, but it won't hold US chalks (like Crayola) firmly enough. They have a smaller diameter than the Japanese/Korean chalks. It is well worth buying Hagoromo chalk to go with this chalk holder. You will be pleased. Hagoromo chalk is OUTSTANDING, and this chalk holder holds it firmly in place until it really is too short. Only then does it slip back. Just be careful about accidentally pressing the button on the end. There is a spring inside, so keep a finger on the end of the chalk when you go to adjust it, or the chalk will come shooting out.
