The term Tabla is derived from a Sanskrit word which means “Drum”. Tabla is a pair of Drums. It consist of a small right hand Drum called “Dayan” and a larger left hand Drum called “Bayan” and The right hand drum is made up of SHESHAM wood and the left hand larger Drum is Made by Iron. The diameter of small Drum at the membrane may run from just under 5 inches to over 6 Inches approx and that of larger Drum will be from 9 Inches to 10 Inches to approx. Both Drums feature goat skin drum heads and camel leather straps to adjust the pitch. The large black spot on Tablas surfaces are a mixture of gum soot and iron filing. There functions is to create the Bell – like timbre that is characteristics Of the instrument, Tabla is made with alluring visual Harmony Enticing percussionists to experience the Rhythms of traditions. This tabla costs $250. From the pictures you can see they syahi wore off in about 15 mins of playing. When I reached out to the manufacturer - they mentioned syahi is just a chemical and isn’t needed to play a tabla. That statement is outright wrong. Syahi is needed to ensure the tablas sound in tune.I don’t think the product is well made and the tabla skin was brittle - I had to replace the entire thing except the shell.Definitely not worth the price. Plus, the manufacturer actively gave me wrong information that the syahi isn’t needed in order to not replace the product. That show disingenuous mindset to lead the customer astray.100% do not recommend this manufacturer. The only thing the tablas are good for is the shell and the skins is as good as dog hyde - so if you have animals it may come in handy but that is an expensive treat. Lol
