Glad I got this grommet tool, heavy duty enough for putting extra grommets in my camper canopy, which is a 2 to 3 layer tarp around the edges, and takes a lot of tension when it snows. It is possible to punch the hole with the grommet tool, but leaves tarp material stuck in the hole, so I found it works much better to punch out a hole with an awl, and then the grommet tool finishes it off nicely. Up in the air like that it's not practical to hammer against anything, so I needed one that was hand held. I use tarps a lot so this will be very handy.

I hestitated based on some of the reviews but it worked great for me. I do wish someone (or the packaging) what have been more clear that there was a different size of smaller bag that the grommets adhere too. Maybe it was a blonde thing for me but the smaller bag was hard to see inside the larger bag of grommets and I kept trying to put the two larger ones together (i know... dumb....but I can't be the only one when you are a newbie at this). I used them for fabric signs and it will pucker when the fabric is so thin but not bad enough to work so great. I am super happy with it.

I got this to put grommets in an out door furniture cover and I couldn’t get a single hole through the material using the supplied materials. I tried 3 layers of fabric first and then 2 and then 1 layer, didn’t even cut one layer. I will be returning this item.

I bought this to repair a tarp. The main issue is that the tool relies upon the grommet edge to punch the hole. Even in 1 layer of plastic tard it only punched the hole 1/4 of the time. Usually the grommet was set anyways and I could tear out the hole by hand afterwards (or just leave the flap in the hole).Of note:1) The kit comes with a hole punch that you can hammer, but this will require you to remove the tarp from wherever it is to use it, so was not useful for my situation.2) Even though the images imply that it comes with 2 different sizes of grommets, it only comes with the big ones. The tool would not have worked for the smaller ones anyways.3) Don't even bother to try to get through 2 or more layers of tarpOverall it got the job done so I am happy, but a tool that punches the holes better would have been an improvement. The case is nice too.
