I purchased this for checking a pistol barrel for its ID, but this is a great set for general gunsmithing. Firearms are full of small diameter holes. The only way to properly measure them is with a pin gauge. If you need to check clearances larger than a feeler gauge, but a scale won't fit, you can use the pin gauge on its side for a clearance measurement. It is most likely a tool not often used, but the sets low cost makes it a worthwhile tool to have on hand when needed.

Having a set of pins gauges like this makes it much easier to measure gaps or separation between two surfaces. The pins are of high quality and accurate enough to run up and down the scale until a match is found. Just be sure to try one pin at a time and replace before getting another pin. There is no easy way to tell them apart. On the bigger ones, there is room to scratch their diameter on the end of the pin.

I used these as my measurement standards when reviewing 2 sets of Bolight digital calipers from here on Amazon (Excellent Calipers. See my review for more information). These pins will be used for general shop work where .001 accuracy is my end goal. Based on my test measurements with the new calipers mentioned above, an existing set of igaging absolute origin calipers, a 1" digital micrometer, and a 1" mechanical micrometer...these things are dead on when measured to .001 inch. I could occasionally get a +/- of .0005 across my results, but more often read perfect to 4 decimals or better with my digital micrometer. Note: These items are temperature sensitive, and after setting outside my door read consistently .001 under for every pin. After setting in a warm house with the lid open for a couple of hours, all measurements were as near to perfect as I could ask for. In the event that you are still developing an eye for small measurements, you will have likely seen the one-thousandth of an inch or "one-thou" for short (.001) phrase tossed around a lot. Until I held a piece of .001 feeler gauge, I didn't really have an appreciation to how small that really is. A post-it note is .004". Human hair is as small as .002. So...if you can settle to be accurate to the size of 1/2 of the thickness of fine baby hair, then these pins will work for you. There are sets out there that may be more accurate, but most people honestly don't work within those tolerances. Those that do are skilled to a level that I will not reach and my hats off to them. Save your money on these, and you get to buy more tools. In closing, I did buy these pins...none of that free stuff for a review here.

First impressions (not examined / measured each one). Individual pins seem to have good finish, no burrs (a cut above some other cheap brands in that respect). Arrived covered in oil, but not individually wrapped in waxy brown paper like some brands.Case is a big let-down - it is too narrow to stand upright like a suitcase (has no feet) and must be laid flat (takes up a lot of storage room). More importantly, the case is made from very thin brittle plastic material and the latches are very flimsy (won't last long). Will probably end up using stick on Velcro straps to keep it closed once the factory catches break off (any minute now). One solution would be to acquire a slightly larger tougher case from Harbor Freight (or Amazon) and keep this one inside - the numbered holes being invaluable for organization and identification. Be difficult to find a more flimsy case than this.

I spot-checked about a dozen of these pins, from all over the box. All measured as indicated. Each pin is marked with its size. Each pin's spot in the nice sturdy fitted case is also marked for the size it contains. The case cover keeps the pins in their holes when it's closed. Seems to me to be a good value for what it cost. Other Chinese sets can cost double what this cost, a Starrett is 10 times as much. All the pins are well oiled; no rust. Based on what I received, I'd recommend this set. I generally prefer to buy American/Starrett whenever possible, but for my hobby machine shop needs, this is adequate. If you're a production shop or very demanding needs, this may not be good enough, but for me, the pins measured exactly what they were marked, within spec. No certification was supplied with the set, but for the price, one can't seriously expect one.
