Besides being a beautiful instrument, this mandolin is perfect for a beginner. I did visit the local guitar store and received help as I felt it would not stay in tune. This is normal for any new strings. I bought a tuner and once it had been tuned several times it began holding the tune. Very good value for the $. Would definitely recommend!

I bought this as a Christmas gift. I was looking for a middle of the line mandolin- something not juvenile, but also not high end, and the Ibanez didn't disappoint. The mandolin has a beautiful starburst design and the wood is a warm orange color. While the strings were very tight, after some play and breaking in, they produced a beautiful sound. If you are looking for a great beginner mandolin, or one that will not be used on a daily basis, this is the perfect item for you.

I've never played a mandolin before, and selected this one as a starter. Out of the box, it needs to be set up. It's really pretty easy. A good set of new strings is a must. (I chose D'Addario EJ73 light gauges.) The neck is perfect, as Ibanez products generally are. The pickguard needed a tiny bit of bending of the metal support bracket and a little felt pad under the mounting screw up by the neck. The only thing that kept me from giving it a five-star rating was that the feet of bridge needed a little adjustment with some 220 sand paper. Setting the intonation (properly positioning the bridge) was easily done with an electronic tuner. The tuning heads are really pretty good, and it tuned up beautifully. Although I have never played an instrument in mandolin/violin tuning, I took a quick tour through a pocket chord dictionary, and was playing very happily on it in one afternoon. Set it up properly yourself, or have someone who knows instrument mechanics do it for you, and you will be amazed at the playability of this very reasonably-priced instrument. The finish is good, although a little glossy. I recommend this for a beginner or a serious musician who wants to try a new instrument before making a huge investment. I am happy, and it has added a new arrow to my quiver of bluegrass weapons.

I am very pleased with the quality and tone of this mandolin. I'm a beginner and I wanted something above a cheap model and the professional grade mandolins. I highly recommend this mandolin.

I bought this based on the Ibanez name and reviews. But when I received this Mandolin it was so bad I couldn't get enough tone out of the E string to activate the tuner. In addition it buzzed without being noted. Also the G string just "thumped" when it was played. Needless to say there was no way I could set it up. Also there was scratches on the pick guard. I contacted the seller and they refunded part of my purchase price. I took the refund and went to a authorized Ibanez repair shop. The repair man said it had the wrong strings, the strings installed were for a electric mandolin. Both the bridge and the nut had to be filed for the new strings to fit correctly. Of course the bridge was in the wrong position. I got the instrument back two days ago and I am still not happy with it. Still little tone from the E string and the G string is buzzing. I also noted the bridge does not lay completely flat on the instrument. It make me wonder is there a difference in the nut and bridge between a electric and acoustic instrument? Bottom line, unless you are an expert, plan to spend extra dollars for set up. I have tried to find a number for Ibanez so I could find out if I just gota bad instrument. Does anyone have number?
