About this item

  • Made of Stainless Steel, high precision ground and hardened

Professional high precision tool! depth measuring base allows the conversion of a standard caliper to a depth gauge. It attaches to the bottom end of calipers to aid depth measurement. Its locking nut secures the base to the caliper. Made of stainless steel, high precision ground and hardened easily attached with screw knob. No modification to caliper. To get it done I took a piece of 1/4" steel plate and put two holes in it so I could bolt it to the housing to give me a stable platform to measure from. Using my dial caliper I used the depth side to take the measurement using this to give the caliper stability on the plate. Worked like a charm! Gave me the reading I wanted, make the necessary adjustment with shims and done and back on the track. If you done have hundreds of dollars for the professional pinion depth gauge tools, this will work very well.

This gizmo is something I was planning on making myself so it's good to have one available at a decent price. I was a bit worried about the reviews that stated that the thing would not properly align with the caliper rails and/or would fall off the calipers, but I was prepared to machine it if needed- it was the ground square surfaces that I wanted. On getting it, I found that the reviews were correct, but for the wrong reason. It is a simple error in a part- some doofus spec'd the tightening screw with a cheapo non-square and concave end, to save about $0.0000001. That results in the screw camming out the caliper rail, so there was no hope of it working. Just remove the screw, square the end up a little with a file, and then round the end so the contact is in the middle (axis of rotation). Works fine now.

Adds stability to depth measurements which the basic calipers were not designed for. The butt end of these are not flat and rock side-to-side. This very inexpensive "foot" greatly extends the utility of any quality caliper creating a high quality depth guage.

Digital calipers as a depth gage are actually very accurate but they have to be perfectly perpendicular. This gives you much much more repeatable measurements and repeatability and accuracy go hand and hand!!! Is it perfect, now..a depth mic is still the go to tool, for sub .001" measurements or even sub .003" but this works for all else!! Just make sure u put it on proper!! Set calipers vertical to depth check on flat surface(ground steel or granite if available)and when it is bottomed out install this. Make sure the fixed side opposite the set screw is completly against the calipers. Tighten set screw and reference a 123 block or gage block. Thats it.., it takes maybe 30 seconds.

I was hoping for something better. The one I received is 18 thou over 5/8" with makes for a pretty loose fit on my calipers. All of my calipers are with 2-3 thou of 5/8" and I guess I'm not sure what the industry range is, but it just seems way to loose to me.The thumb screw locks the caliper rail against one wall of the fitting, but I had had to remove the screw to shape and polish the end. It always wanted to twist the caliper rail out of the position with the wonky screw head that was delivered to me.The base of the unit I received is not super flat. Noticeable wobble on the surface plate. I didn't measure it, but guessing a couple thou of twist here. Not too surprising really, since asking the piece to keep flatness over a rather thin arch of metal is a bit much. Wish they made something thicker and more stable.I'll probably keep this, as it serves its general purpose and will be fine for quick caliper measurements. Just not overly impressed.

If you don't need super precise accuracy, adding this to your dial or digital calipers is a viable alternative to as separate anvil gage. I'm not a machinist but I regularly use this to measure pin protrusion in certain sporting goods that have a reputation for ill intent with certain folks. Again it's not super precise but gets the job done for me.

Finish is just okay. But it is 100% functional and serves its purpose. It is extremely easy to install and gives repeatable results.

A bit loose but works.
