My 2003 Pontiac Grand Am 4 door had 98,000 miles on it. The original struts weren't failing, but there was a clack sound in the right front when I hit bumps. Reason enough to replace all four struts and their mounts. Installed KYB GR-2 334295 and 334229 struts and KYB SM5145 and SM5146 strut mounts, the KYB part numbers prescribed for the vehicle. After the alignment shop set the camber, I was all set for another 100,000 miles, right? Wrong. Upon departure from the alignment shop I noticed a rubbery squeaking noise in the right front when small road bumps were encountered. I contacted the installation technician asking whether there were any unusual aspects to the front strut installation. He replied the installation was very routine, nothing fancy. I am concluding that these strut mounts, KYB SM5146 are junk. Both the left and right one have a rubbery squeak when going over small bumps, and when turning the steering at low speeds, like when in a parking lot. My once annoying 'clack' sound with the old parts has now turned my car into a full-on jalopy-sounding squeaky-car. How embarassing. I suggest folks looking at purchasing this part think twice before purchasing the KYB SM5146 strut mount. I have contacted KYB tech support via their email and received an auto-response stating they will contact me. I intend to press for a full refund of the purchase price for the parts, and to have them replaced (at my expense probably and disappointingly) with another brand of strut mount as recommended by the installation technician.
