This is a solid set of supplies useful for a novice bobbin lacemaker.Everything supplied is excellent, and if one wanted to, one could certainly start up and start weaving lace! However, I want to pad the styrene pillow with felt and cover it with twill before I start, so that's an extra step.I will note that these bobbins are round and have neither spangles nor holes for adding such; Lacis also sells square bobbins which would likely work better here.I have not yet tried the projects, but they do include prickings for some basic lace edging. Looking at the prickings and the thread included, I am not sure whether these are a good fit; the pricking templates seem large for the very fine thread included. I will be starting with projects from a book that specifies particular thread and has the pricking templates to scale.Still, this does have all the basics got get one started, and very conveniently!

I actually purchased this kit to get the bobbins and pins for a current project. This is the second time I've ordered this kit. I like the size of the bobbins and the price is great especially with free shipping! It's a great start for any beginner since it also includes thread, patterns, and a base to hold the pins. I think if someone is teaching lacemaking this is a great kit for each student.

This is a good kit for getting quality bobbins and a few patterns. TLDR, this kit is probably best as a supplement to an advanced beginner or intermediate person who has existing supplies. Its not that good for an absolute beginner (like me).It was nice the quality Lizbeth size 20 thread was included, but it isn't enough for more than one or two small projects. I used my own size 20 and size 30 thread. The instructions were extremely sparse. They explain what bobbin lace IS, and the basic movements, but they're no help in deciphering the included patterns. The instructions on actually HOW to work each pattern are scant. I've read the instructions over and over and taken it step by step, but I can't figure out how to follow the patterns without making massive mistakes.I've taken to using youtube and online/historic books and tutorials to find beginner patterns and get step by step instructions.I haven't used the small pins, these aren't the good kind for lacemaking. (the plastic/glass cap can fall off and you'd be stuck using pliers to get the pins out of the hard foam) The larger 'corsage' pins are great for holding pairs out of the way when you're working or have to put your work down. I've used my own metal headed sewing pins (and tomato pincushion). The round 'pillow' is ok for beginners. Trying to prop it up on the cardboard and make it stay was difficult. I ended up propping the foam on my laptop keyboard or in a small cardboard box and working that way. Both are so lightweight. The patterns are on thick cardstock, printed clearly, which is good. The patterns may have been printed a bit too big for the size 20 thread used.If a person is buying this kit, they're likely using it to teach themselves bobbin lace. If so, Lacis may have been better served by maybe making a kit including more (and inexpensive) thread and simpler patterns with detailed instructions on how to complete each pattern, slowly, excruciaingly, step by step. Beginners are going to mess up OFTEN, and they're going to need the simple patterns and a lot of thread. For a more advanced beginner, perhaps one or two of the included patterns would be useful, and the 24 bobbins included would be a nice addition to an existing set of bobbins. An advanced beginner might also be able to use the small amount of thread included and turn it into a small sampler (being less likely to make drastic mistakes that result in throwing away the woven piece, and wasting the small amount of thread.)I like the bobbins, I like the thread, and I like the idea, but I can only give this kit a 3/5 max.

Short version:This bobbin lace kit is pretty decent for beginners. It gives you all the tools you need to start this hobby without dropping a lot of cash. It could use a little aftermarket modification (more styrofoam and a t-shirt), but it's more than good enough for a beginner. The instructions and included patterns are not helpful, but online tutorials will serve. An experienced lacemaker may be disappointed in the quality of the materials, but the beginner will find them good enough and at a good price. The Long Version:It comes with:24 bobbins. They have a notch at the top to keep your slipknot in place. They have no holes for spangles, so I will be taping the handles with colored electrical tape for identification. I can't rate the bobbins in comparison to other bobbins, especially the antique collections that dedicated lacemakers keep, but they work far better than the pencils I was using before.A "cookie pillow" and stand. The pillow is an oval piece of very dense stryofoam, about half an inch thick. The stand is folded thick cardboard. Together they work well, but you can't use the foam board by itself on your lap, as you will stab your legs with your pins. To work on my lap, I attached another piece of stryofoam to the back of it, and stretched out an old tshirt over the whole thing to provide contrast (white board + white thread = madness).Pins and thread. It came with about two dozen pins with small rounded heads, which were helpful as I only had larger pins with huge plastic heads. It also came with thick white linen thread, which I can't speak to since I've been using regular sewing thread in order to have a different color on each bobbin pair. (which I do to both keep the pairs identified and to help me identify where I made mistakes once the pattern is done)Patterns and instructions. The patterns and instructions are lacking, as described in other reviews. I purchased a bobbin lace book with this kit to make sure I would be able to figure it out, but honestly I just used Youtube an which were more than adequate.
