When I ordered Star World Wellness Store Lead Test Kit, 30 Units, I had learned from internet research that kits such as these - particularly the ones made in China, are no longer recommended by public health authorities as reliable ways to test surfaces (as opposed to paint samples) for lead, because they have high rates of false positives and false negatives - and no there's no way to tell in advance which items are likely to generate a false positive or negative. (That's despite older advice to use kits like these still floating around on government-sponsored health and environmental websites and in mainstream news media). My research indicated that the only reliable way to test surfaces for lead is to submit your item to a lab and the expensive testing may damage or destroy your item. If you are lucky, your item might be included on a reliable site's list of (un)safe items. That said, such a website said that a vintage dish from China inherited from deceased relatives was probably heavily contaminated with lead, so I thought I'd see whether the kit could detect lead in the dish.The kit was easy to use. There is a chart on the side of the box that implies that lighter shades of red/purple mean less lead, but my internet research says these sorts of kits are bad at detecting low levels of lead, so I feel that the chart may be somewhat misleading.My test results:• lead fishing weight - immediately very dark purple (almost black)• suspect dish from China - immediately very dark purple• vintage teapot and teacups from China - immediately very dark purple• other vintage dishes from China with characteristics suspicious for lead contamination - no color change• Corelle plate made before 2005 (could contain lead) - no color change• 1970's-era coffee mug (could contain lead), ceramics made by a relative, bowl acquired last year from a ceramics factory in western Europe, mug recently purchased from photo company - no color change• ceramic ocarina from China - manufacturer told me that glaze is either lead-free and (in case the rep was wrong about that), firing done at very high temp, so lead should not be "available" - no color change inside or out of the ocarina• random plastic jar - no color change• lead fishing weight and suspect dish retested shortly after the swab had been used on other items and had lost its orange color - immediately very dark purple (i.e., looks like you can reuse a swab for a short time). Also, if you quickly get a positive on one side of the swab, you won't necessarily get a positive on the other side if you test another item.My conclusions (which might apply only to ceramics and ??? plastics):• a "negative" item isn't necessarily safe, especially for kids to put in their mouths or eat from - that's based on internet research from reliable sources.• Similarly, a "positive" item might be a false positive, but I'm not going to put it in my mouth or eat or drink from it and if I can return the item I will, unless the manufacturer can show me proof it's lead-free

I don't know if I have a defective batch of swabs, but when following the instructions and dipping in the vinegar, the swabs didn't turn orange... so I don't know that I can test results. I can't speak to efficacy or accuracy. But I feel like I wasted my money, and I still don't have the info I need regarding lead in my belongings...

These are easy to use and so far the tested surfaces have all come up negative. I am unsure how to confirm the accuracy of the product. I can only say that it is easy to use and has enough swabs for a fair number of surfaces.
