Leviton’s Structured Media enclosure provides a centralized hub for the distribution of all of a home’s networking systems, providing homeowners with a reliable, secure, and flexible way of managing their wired homes. In bygone years, a home network needed only a cable TV connection and a phone line to be complete. Today’s homeowners, by contrast, expect the capability to perform many high-bandwidth activities, often simultaneously. Leviton’s Structured Media enclosure is an integral part of any structured wiring solution, enabling contractors and DIY homeowners to consolidate their home networking products into a single location.

28-inch Structured
Media Center
At A Glance:

  • Central distribution point for all of a home’s networking hubs
  • Organizes telephone, TV, multiroom audio, and high-speed data for a home
  • Includes cutout for power module for use with any active gear like ISP modems
  • Can be surface-mounted or recessed
  • Holds up to eight distribution modules

A typical installation of the enclosure shows the components of a structured wiring solution (click to enlarge). An Expandable Hub for Your Wired Home
The 28-inch Structured Media enclosure is designed to organize and integrate all the networking needs of a three- to five-bedroom house, including a home office or den. The Structured Media enclosure provides a convenient termination point for wiring home runs from wall outlets and has the added benefit of cleaning up the haphazard tangles of wires that comprise most home networks. Based on the kind of structured hubs employed in commercial applications, it’s the ideal way to centralize the home’s telephone, television, multiroom audio, and high-speed data networks.

At 28 inches tall by 14 inches wide by 3.5 inches deep, the enclosure provides ample space for different distribution model configurations. Depending on selection and density, the enclosure comfortably houses up to eight distribution modules, such as coaxial cable-based signals or Cat 5e communications equipment. A cut-out in the base of the enclosure accommodates a power module for any active equipment that is placed in the enclosure (for example, modems, routers, or active switches).

    Flexible Installation for Unique Needs
The Structured Media enclosure is designed to facilitate installation flexibility, reduce jobsite labor costs, and enable DIY installation—perfect for retrofits as well as new construction. Included in this kit is a corrugated mud guard that protects the interior of the enclosure. The enclosure can be mounted flush with a surface or mounted in wall. To prevent the enclosure from falling through wall studs during installation, the enclosure sidewalls feature positive tabs that can be folded out. The included enclosure cover, made of 18-gauge steel, features a ¾-inch overlap designed to mask any irregular drywall cuts, ensuring a clean-looking installation.

    What's in the Box
Included in this kit are one 28-inch metal Structured Media center, one flush-mount metal cover, one corrugated mudguard, four No. 10 1-inch wall mounting screws, and six self-healing foam grommets for cable routing.
Up to eight distribution models can be mounted in the enclosure
matrix using special push-lock pins (click each to enlarge).

I purchased this product in order to organize my DirecTV equipment and make it look nicer since the installer basically left it all hanging from the rafters in my basement. I did not use any official Leviton "components" (or stand-offs) with this enclosure other than the Leviton outlet but rather screwed my DirecTV components directly to the inside using sheet metal screws. To make room behind it for the screws as well as bring the depth even with my circuit breaker panel, I first mounted 2x4s to the wall then mounted this enclosure to the 2x4s as this is how my circuit breaker panel was mounted. The idea being that if I ever finish the basement it will all be flush and even, although I could also just remount it between studs as it is optionally designed to do.I wasn't sure if this particular enclosure (28") would be too big for my needs, but after some measuring and planning I figured it should work pretty well, and after actually mounting everything into it, it did work out perfectly in my opinion. It wasn't too big, but big enough that everything isn't all crammed into it, which will make it easier to swap components if I ever need to.If anyone is considering using something like this to mount their DirecTV equipment into, then I'd recommend it. The equipment I mounted into it was:SWiM 16 module and power adapter (PI)2 8-way splittersDECA BB adapter (CCK) and power adapterWhile I didn't purchase it yet, I plan to eventually install the hinged cover on this unit. Initially, due to the position of the outlet placement at the bottom of this enclosure and the design of the DECA BB power adapter, there would be no way to install a cover because the power adapter stuck out the front a little. However, this problem was solved by using one of those 6-outlet adapters that plugs into a standard dual outlet. This allowed me to offset the BB power adapter towards the inside just enough to be able to mount a cover when I decide to do so.It's a bit pricey, but the quality is unmistakable. It really is a nice looking enclosure and I feel that it has many great uses for organizing just about any kind of TV/phone/internet/alarm components you could think of.

This thing is great to hide my wireless router, modem and cabling.People complain because the add on leviton stuff is expensive. But really just go to the hardware store and buy your own stuff to make it work. I installed an X10 plug inside a regular AC rated junction box and just secured it with screws. Everything else I just neatly zip tied. It looks fine and neat enough to me. The x10 plug works great because I dont have to open this up if I need to restart my modem and router. I would highly recommend putting in "x10" or something from "smarthome" if your going to put your wifi router inside and screw it closed. The only problem I had was that the slackers who built my house didn't know that 16 on center is a standard for a reason. So after I neatly cut the drywall out I saw hey this thing is designed to fit perfectly snuggly betweeen 16 on center studs. I had to do some banging on the stud with a hammer to knock it over 1/4 of an inch so I could get this in between the studs. In the process I had to patch some drywall and paint because the screws popped through on the other side of the wall from me banging on the stud. My wife was freaking out and I was swearing quite alot at the morons who built my house, but really not that big of deal to fix.The product itself is great and the shipping was way faster than I expected. I shipped slow boat and it arrived in 2 days.

I have used several of these SMC cabinets around the house for different networking applications. They are sturdy powder coated steel, and super easy to install following the paper instructions or online video. I have used both the flush screw on cover that comes with the combo, as well as the premium vented cover. Both work perfect depending on your needs.Attached photos are of the 28" version. For mounting components, I prefer a combination of zipties, velcro strips, and 3M VHB or similar double sided tape. This is cheaper than using the leviton mounts, and I think better because you can put things exactly where you need them. For my needs, I also have no use for the expensive leviton branded components.I use a cyber power 750VA SL750U UPS and surge protector, which has more capacity at 1/3 the cost of the tripp lite AV550S (the only UPS that is actually marketed to this application).

This is a great quality Structured Media Panel. There’s plenty of room for most of your Structured Wiring and associated equipment. I wouldn’t recommend placing a wireless (wifi) router in this can, as it’s metal and could wreak havoc with the signal.Fast shipping, arrived in perfect shape. Thanks Amazon!

This is good quality, heavy, good instructions. It is metal, which means housing WiFi APs is not a great idea.
