This makes placing a small light easy, without pulling out a multimeter to figure out how much resistance you need to drop the source voltage to avoid burning out your LED. The resistor is built in. The thing is you will have a dimmer output at 5 volts than 12, but not a huge difference. For low level lighting it will work fine. It is really pretty useful to just hook up to a battery without all the other measuring, calculating and then looking for a suitable resistor.
