This is definately a toy. It works... You can see things and that is really cool for the price. There are imperfections in the view--I mean every microscope has some.... But there is more particles and scratches visable through the glass than any microscope I've ever used before. Again, this is only a toy so I'm not upset by it--but I just want to say that in case you want a better feel for what a product like this is going to be before you buy it.The plastic body is a bit flimsy but still useable. I took it apart a little and I wanna note the wire sodering definately could be broken by the thing falling off a desk or something--they definately were skimpy with materials. But the only thing I am frustrated with is that it is hard to focus it enough to see the tiny details. I saw other reviewers kinda mention this but I just wanna explain what it feels like is happening--So you can like... Focus enough to see a quite a bit of what your looking at, but it's not perfect, so you can't see crisp details. I think the difference in making the image crisp and it being extremely difficult to do so is because of the cheap parts--the adjustment is so small, and the parts are very rough for such a transition, and will not settle exactly where the image is crisp, even if you are dextrous enough to microadjust it to the right place.I'm still giving this five stars because it is a working product and very fuctional for the price, but be aware that there are a lot of imperfections that will obscure the view, and it does focus enough to see large details but not enough to make the image crisp enough to see smaller details.Personal story--when I was a child, I asked for toy microscopes and my father said the cheap ones similar to this at walmart were too low quality to bother with, and that made me scared they didn't work at all. If I knew it just meant the image would be just a little blurry, I know I still would have been very happy with this as a child. So if you are buying this for child and you don't have the budget for better quality--don't be scared about that. Just tell them to be careful with since it does feel a little fragile--but a microscope is a delicate intrument so you should alway be careful with one anyways. Also it came with a sample prepared slide of crysals. I didn't know it would--and bought a set of prepared slides so my kids would have something already prepared to look at. If I knew it came with a prepared slide I might not have bought more--I have tight budget--so that's why I want to be clear it has one.I have a picture of the included prepared slide and two other botony slides attached to try and show what looking through the microscope is like.

Not a bad little scope for the 6 thru 8 year old range for learning the basics of using a microscope. The LED is a bit too bright "over washing" objects being viewed at the lower magnification (using the adjustable LED knob doesn't help much). Optics are OK for the price range but objects being viewed will be difficult to bring into focus with no fine focusing knob. Also, and most importantly, switching magnifications will require repositioning the specimen to bring it into the field of view. But then again, this scope is just for kids. (And why the ridiculous little screw to open the battery cover...I think my vacuum cleaner may some day find it in the carpet cause thats where it ended up. You might need a jewelers screwdriver to open it anyway)

This was great for my kid. This helps practice looking at different things close up. Identifying different kinds of cells and stuff. She was very excited about it!

I'd give this a zero if I could. Piece. Of. Junk. Granted, it was $15. The plastic is cheep and it was missing the springs that hold the batteries in place. "Santa" brought this for Christmas and my daughter was heartbroken when the microscope she asked Santa for was broken. Well, Daddy told her he'd let Santa know it didn't work and would ask him to send a new one from the north pole... apparently Santa is not replacing items. Spend your money elsewhere. I can accept the $15 loss, but not when it comes to watching a little girl cry on Christmas.

I teach science at a school for students with emotional disabilities and disturbances and they are very rough on equipment to say the least. But this microscope is perfect because it it does the job so the kids get the same experiences but I don't have to spend a fortune replacing equipment every time a student gets mad and throws one across the room. (Also one of my kids did that with this one the other day and somehow it survived so I am pretty much in love with these now!)
