according to Makitatools, this is the only U.S. attachment that will accept a brush-cutter blade. so thats why i bought it. it also has a very large shield on it, which is a safety plus. i have tested this attachment and it works great with a blade. i am using it on a XUX01Z 36V power head so it should be noted that even with the 2nd battery, when you put this blade in a bad enough bind to stall the motor, it will cause the electronics to go into protection mode. meaning you will have to cycle power on the controls (OFF then ON). go slow and be safe. at 7000RPM with a 9" blade, this thing spins at over 185MPH at the edge. it will eat your feet or your pet if you are not careful. FYI... the string can be up to 17" diameter, so thats over 350MPH if you were wondering.

This attachment for the Makita 36v system works just as it should. Great quality from Makita as usual.

I bought this "Brush Cutter" couple shaft attachment but it's not what it advertises. It's just another string trimmer.Per the manual: "In US and Canada, EM403MP and EM404MP do not include the metal blade, nut, cup, or clamp washer". Also, the hex wrench shown in the manual is missing.I have no idea whether the "Makita 196500-7 Brush Cutter Conversion Kit" listed elsewhere on Amazon is intended for the EM403MP, or instead for the EM405MP (neither are listed as supported trimmers or "brush cutters" in the sales listing). And no idea whether that kit actually includes any/all of the exact parts needed (it certainly doesn't include the blade, and it probably doesn't include the hex wrench, but it looks like it has other extraneous stuff, like an extra shoulder strap, extra blade guard, extra handle, extra socket wrench). Not only is it unclear whether this kit properly fits this brush cutter, but again, it is very expensive (~$57, without the blade), so I'm skipping that.Instead I am buying these separately, to see how it goes: - part # 347105-8 - CLAMP WASHER (~$9) - part # 457290-0 - CUP (~$9) - part # 252236-9 - HEX. LOCK NUT M10-17 (~$6) - part # B-14118 or D-74859 (unclear if same) - BRUSH CUTTER BLADE (~$39) - unknown part number - HEX WRENCH (same as what's included with the EM405MP, if you have one of those, then I guess you could use that instead. Otherwise ~$10)1 Star to Makita for not selling what they advertised, which they even referenced in the manual.5 Stars to Me if I can successfully turn this into an actual brush cutter after I buy and apply all the required but missing parts.

I like how powerful it is, the angle is a little difficult to get used to if you are short(5'3)but I love the versatility of this brand.

Dislike: with the variety of attachment tools to fit the correct main tool, the description as to the specific tool is not clear.

WARNING: It's not a brush cutter. You will have to source an adapter kit to run a blade. You should not pay extra for an upgraded tool that does not do the very thing that you've paid extra for.The fact that this is not disclosed before buying is misleading and unacceptable. With that said, it is not identical to em405mp. It has different gear ratios according to the manual. It also includes a larger shield. The string trimmer itself is very well built. It's just not a brush cutter and it's certainly not worth paying more for and then needing to spend fifty dollars more for a blade adapter.

Typical makita quality. I already have their trimmer and needed a brush cutter. i bought the forester blade and it didn't fit the trimmer. needed an adapter to fit so i figured i would buy a whole new coupler shaft so i can quickly swap. the new brush cutter coupler arrived and it literally is another trimmer head with a larger guard. still didn't fit the blade... had to get an adapter anyway. idk why the pics show it can accept a blade. it cannot. fyi it takes a sthil type adapter/
