Bite Club is Mattel’s latest addition to their Jurassic lineup. They are highly stylized little vinyl figurines. Each comes with a small accessory which creates a small diorama when placed beside the dinosaur. There are three total in this first series. I only picked up my two favorites initially, because I wasn’t sure how much I would like them. Now that I have them in hand, however, I think I may just be hooked! These little figures are absolutely adorable! Their style (especially the Tyrannosaurs) reminds me of a 90’s era Warner Bros. cartoon, and I mean that in the best way! They are mostly static figures. The only movable part on them is their stubby tails. There is not much in the way of fine detail, but what is there accentuates their cartoonish appearance perfectly. The Triceratops has raised scales along her eye ridges, and frill. She has some raised osteoderms along her back as well. The little Rexy has some scales along her eye ridges, a couple of bumps on the snout, some ridges down her neck, and a few little scales/osteoderms across her back. Both figures have a plethora of wrinkles around their limbs, tails, and necks to emphasize their rotund stature. The figures are colored well, but don’t really require much in the way of paint. What paint is there, is applied perfectly. Rexy has some markings around her eyes. The eyes themselves are large and cartoonish. Her teeth and tongue are well done. They are separate plastic inserts, so they do not require paint at all. Her belly is also a separate colored piece of plastic. Her finger claws are, unfortunately, left unpainted. However, her toe claws are painted perfectly. She also has a few little stripes on her back. The little Triceratops has some spots along her frill. Her beak and horns appear to be separate pieces of plastic. The little hornlets along her frill are painted nicely, as are her little toe claws, and the osteoderms across her back. One eye faces forward, and the other faces back as if she’s glancing back at her included accessory. As previously stated, each figure comes with a small accessory. The Triceratops comes with a little pile of dino droppings. The tubby little Triceratops has one leg kicking backwards as if kicking sand on her pile of poop. This kicked sand is included in the sculpt of the droppings too. The little rex is paired with a tiny figure of Donald Gennaro. The little lawyer is even sitting on a toilet, ready to be eaten! The human figures (Owen is included with Blue in the set that I don’t have yet) are responsible for the only real nitpick I have with the lineup. The face of the humans are left unpainted. This is such an odd decision, and even looks a bit creepy up close. Thankfully, you will not be looking at the face too often, so it’s really just a minor issue rather than a serious complaint. Mattel’s original attempt at stylized collectibles (the Snap Squad) proved to be extremely popular. Unfortunately, their successors (called “Wild Pop-Ups”) were underwhelming, to say the least. I believe Mattel may have struck gold once again with these new Bite Club figures. Their small stature, chubby build, and cartoonish appearance are a winning formula of cuteness, in my opinion! I really hope Series 1 is just the first of many, because this is a worthy successor to the Snap Squad!
