This is basically a glorified camera with a powerful zoom in feature, but no it will not show you microscopic germs and bacteria. Definitely a hit with the kids and a great way to let them enjoy indoors and outdoors. They have taken pictures of EVERYTHING! Including some nasty things I wish not to mention. haha. But they were so amazed to see what things could be made out of, fruits, tiny crumbs, even the dirt under their nails, the texture of our fingerprints, etc. A lot of the close up pictures are actually amazing and could make beautiful art, or screen savers/wallpapers. The camera can also take videos so that's a feature kids adores. It has a light feature with 3 dimming levels as well, and the included memory card allows for endless fun. Ours however did not survive the rough handling of so many kids (all the neighborhood kids have at least held it) and it will not start up again despite our efforts to charge it. But it was amazing while it lasted, and we still have the memory card to see the fun the kids had with it. The ergonomic style of the camera brings me back to memories of the camcorders back in the 90's with the knuckle strap and the flip out camera. I'm glad they used that style. Definitely recommend, it's a toy different than everything else they already own.
